Wahoo and Umbrella - Filmmaker recounts test

Wahoo and Umbrella were code names for two underwater tests conducted in 1958. Wahoo was conducted on May 16, 1958 and Umbrella was conducted on June 8, 1958. Pat Bradley, the cameraman who photographed these events recounts his first hand experience of seeing these tests and being on the island as the tests took place.

One of the most impressive atomic explosions I have seen. The fact that the cameras zoomed the ship (so at a smaller scale) shows the tremendous energy from the explosion. The more traditional "bird views" are nice but do now translate well the energy released like this one.

I've always seen the mushroom cloud view from high above, and though it was massive,  compared that boat to compare the size, THIS is just...Awe-inspiring and terrifying

And these shots used the Mk-7, one of the tiniest and lowest yield nukes the US ever made. It was designed to fit inside a depth charge drum, or in a bomb small enough to be carried underwing on a large fighter. Castle Bravo was 1500x more powerful!
