Look at that explosion, and consider that 8kt is a TINY atomic bomb. The Mark 7 was small to allow the bomb to be carried on the wing pylon of a large fighter or attack plane. Also it was used for the first atomic depth charge.

It’s scary to think that that blast was ONLY 8 kilotons. The blast would be a lot bigger if it was a e.g. 80 kiloton bomb

Hardtack Umbrella was a series of nuclear tests conducted by the United States in 1958. The tests involved detonating nuclear bombs underwater to study the effects of nuclear weapons on naval vessels and underwater structures. The purpose was to evaluate the survivability of ships and submarines during a nuclear attack and to gather data on the blast, shockwave, and radiation effects.

One of the tests conducted as part of the Hardtack Umbrella series was the "Hardtack Umbrella - Underwater Nuclear Burst" test. This test, also known as the Hardtack Wahoo test, took place on May 16, 1958, in the Pacific Ocean. The nuclear device, with a yield of approximately 9.3 kilotons, was detonated at a depth of 500 feet (152 meters).

The purpose of the Hardtack Wahoo test was to examine the effects of an underwater nuclear explosion on a simulated naval task force. The test included various types of naval vessels, including submarines, destroyers, and aircraft carriers, positioned at different distances from the detonation point. The goal was to assess the vulnerability of these vessels to the blast, shockwave, and radiation produced by an underwater nuclear explosion.

The data collected from the Hardtack Umbrella tests, including the Hardtack Wahoo test, contributed to the understanding of nuclear weapon effects and influenced the development of military strategies and technologies for naval warfare during the Cold War era. It also helped in designing countermeasures and protective measures to enhance the survivability of naval forces in the event of a nuclear attack.

Sailors: Sir, is it safe to be within 500 meters of a atomic bomb
Captain: yes

8 kiloton only … bear in mind we have 4 megaton yield bombs sitting in launch tubes now. That’s 500x more powerful than this bomb shown here.
