My mind immediately thought when she added "especially for taking public transit" is because of how sharp the hat pins were, women often used them for self defense. I have read quite a few articles about the history of hat pins, and I found it was pretty cool how they used their resources to protect themselves like that!

(Edit: Guys I know that they were designed for the hat to stay on the head. All I was saying is that they used them that way sometimes. Chill out.)

My grandmother once told me her public transit hat pin story. Nothing like having a large sharp object easily accessible at all times.

Edit: WELL HELLO EVERYONE! The hat pin story is as follows. When my grandmother was a young girl she and her mother road the bus a lot. And every time her mother insisted that they looked their very best including hats that were obviously secured with hat pins. She said it was a little weird and she never understood why until one day it became very clear. She and her mother were on a particularly crowded bus and a man kept bumping into them and "accidentally" grabbing onto my great grandmother. The third time he did it he also put a hand on my grandmother. At this point her mother had enough and very subtly pulled her hat pin out of her hair and held it in her hand so that about 3 inches of it were sticking out from her closed fist. The next time this man "accidently" lurched towards them by the time his hand touched my grandmother her mother's hat pin made contact with his stomach. He screamed and jumped away and she quickly tucked it back into her hat. Everyone starred at him and my grandmother said her mother just smiled politely and the guy got off at the next stop.

And thus ends the public transit hat pin story, I hope it lives up to the month of build up I didn't know was happening. Have a great day!

Also ask your elder people questions if you can communicate with them without it being a danger to your mental or physical health. Sometimes they say things that are weird in a bad way, but sometimes they're weird in a good way, and this was one of them.

Isnt it crazy how the women were covered from wrist to wrist, neck to ankle and still needed to worry about creeps on public transit. That hat pin came through clutch.
