Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a partial mobilization of reservists in Russia, marking the first mobilization in Russia since World War II.

Putin’s address to the nation comes a day after Russian-controlled regions in eastern and southern Ukraine announced plans to hold votes on becoming integral parts of Russia. The Kremlin-backed efforts to swallow up four regions could set the stage for Moscow to escalate the war following Ukrainian successes.

Putin said he has signed a decree on the partial mobilization, which is due to start on Wednesday. “We are talking about partial mobilization, that is, only citizens who are currently in the reserve will be subject to conscription, and above all, those who served in the armed forces have a certain military specialty and relevant experience,” Putin said.

The referendums, which have been expected to take place since the first months of the war, will start Friday in the Luhansk, Kherson and partly Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions.

Nothing says “this is a bluff” like “this is not a bluff.”

Thanks for the auto-generated subtitles!

The real core problem is that no one accuses the UN of the incompetence of its executive body! The UN should have sent an international peacekeeping mission long ago to immediately and effectively prevent hostile actions and to conduct fair referendums in the various regions of Ukraine which intend to gain more self-determined independence!

But no, the UN prefers instead to just talk and watch the war unfold even during the current General Assembly. After all, what other reasonable alternative intervention is available to the international community when citizens are being attacked in hospitals and schools and by terrorists?

Invite Switzerland and Turkey to Ukraine as neutral negotiators and peacekeepers?!?

I had a strange dream bout my family and I having to move to Ukraine. It was a horrible dream, seeing bodies everywhere, having to constantly evacuate from building to building, sirens were going off as missiles were striking, when I woke up, it made me realize the hell they are going through right now. I’m so sorry to the Ukrainians, I wish there was more we could do to help.

Those power graping world leaders are clear and imminent threats to all humanity.
If you are 70 (69), 80 years who can not think rationally should step down yourself with grace and dignity. Doing everything for staying in power is a very very dangerous and narcissistic game.

At this point we should say we are letting Ukraine join NATO and the EU. If Russia wants to annex Ukrainian territory then Ukraine is no longer neutral and the deal of Ukraine not joining the EU is off.

I like how the decree doesn't exactly specify reservists, but does say civilians. The decree also admits Russia has a military-industrial complex
