This scene proves that Tamara was just an attempt at moving on from Emma. If he truly loved Tamara he would have told Emma he was engaged, but instead he told Emma, “there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you… It’s complicated.” Neal was engaged, he was afraid Emma wouldn’t forgive him, and he honestly did not know how to get out of his relationship with Tamara without hurting her.”
