Back in the summer of '62 saw them bring in the then state record in Maine, I think. As a kid going into third grade at the time it was impressive as heck! It was over 600 lbs caught on a line.

When I was a kid, I used to watch the longliners come in and the Japanese be waiting to buy them ship them overseas.

Twenty years ago, a couple friends and I left Montauk for the Canyon around 5am. At 8:30 something was on the hook. It took until noon to finally get the giant bluefin on board. Weighed well over 650lbs. Bigger than the one in this video based on the photo we had taken at the dock. There were three guys, two Japanese men and a 19 year old kid waiting at the dock when we pulled in. After a tail core sample, nthe three each handed a slip of paper to the captain with their bids. The kid won, had it dropped into a tank of frozen brine in the back of a truck, and sent it straight to JFK for a flight to Japan. The fish went for close to $12, 000. Any fish over 120lbs belongs to the crew, so we got nothing, but the captain gave us some beautiful tuna he bought for us and gave us another trip later that year, no charge except for fuel. The boat was the Bluefin, Captain Potts. He may be retired now, I know he sold the boat because it's moored on the Byram River in Port Chester now. Update: I'm told that Capt. Potts has passed away. He was a second or third generation tuna hunter and charter. In the '50s, his mom used to fly a small plane over the boat and spot the tuna, line up the boat and signal when to throw a harpoon. They wouldn't even see the tuna from the boat until it had been speared. They used to guarantee at least one tuna for charters or no charge. There were many more tuna back then. I wonder if anyone is using drones nowadays to spot fish below the surface.

My stepbrother was always coming up with half-baked ass schemes to get rich quick. He is actually a pretty intelligent and creative guy and I knew one day he would find one that worked. I even told him so. So one day, he gets a bug up his ass that wouldnt go away. Next thing you know he takes a 2nd mortgage out, buys a fucking tunaboat, and a month later had the mortgage paid off. He has regular clientele overseas that buy from him and he has become a legendary tuna man. Hes an absolute master at catching them. I had no idea how lucrative that is. Hes rich as fuck to put it mildly.

That's cool. The guy in the navy shirt is one of the main fish mongers on Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks. Cool catch.

Why does the head need to be removed? I can understand the tail and fins being removed because there’s practically no meat in them. But doesn’t the head still contain a good amount of meat?

This is what is called 'making bank'.
At 700 lbs, that couldn't have sold cheap.

In Australia we couldn't sell that fish to the market as our government is worried they may miss out on there cut. Unfortunately Australia is the most controlled country in the world, worse than a dictatorship unfortunately.
