But the population of tuna is on the decline, specifically bluefin tuna, which is known as the king of sushi. Business Insider follows expert bidder Takayuki Shinoda inside the fast-paced world of tuna bidding and its role in marine life sustainability.

"I am worried that there will be no tuna for you after 20 years, also we receive truckloads of tuna every hour"

Down 97% in just 10 years...that's actually insane.

I absolutely adore tuna. It’s my favorite sushi and I just love it. But I would be more than happy to give it up for two years if it meant a worldwide ban on fishing tuna would help bring back the population.

I've heard in some countries, when they hunt land animals, every 5-7 seasons they have 1 full year no hunting year when all the animals can reproduce and leave their offspring to boost population, but for sure there are seasons when you can hunt each of the species.
I think this needs to be implemented in regards to marine life too.

Crazy how they’re concerned about no more tuna being left in 30 years but yet they’re still overfishing

Anyone else remembers when there was this concept called hunting/fishing season? So that for certain periods of time some animals couldn't be catched be cause it was their mating season; something very necessary for their population to regain it's lost numbers after hunting/fishing season?

Yeah, neither do I.

The problem of declining catches due to overfishing is not limited to Japan. There is no change in the fact that it is a problem that fishermen in countries all over the world must think about. Even if one country regulates the amount of fish caught, it doesn't make sense if fishermen in another country are overfishing. Tuna is not the only tuna that is endangered due to overfishing, and if sushi becomes more popular around the world in the future, it will undoubtedly become a major problem.
