Satisfying Electrical Work ⚡️🚧 🛠

Mineral insulated cables don't come much bigger than this. Gary tackles a monster 19 core MICC cable. He carefully removed the heavy-duty copper sheath and taps out the magnesium oxide insulation. To seal the cable he used a special compound filled pot and then attaches the cable sleeving.

fun fact: mineral insulated cable was invented by an electrician who wished he'd trained as a plumber.

For those interested/haven’t encountered this before: This is *MIMS* (Mineral Insulated Multi Strand) cable, often used for static cable runs where good armouring is required e.g. through workshops and machine rooms. It’s particularly common in fire alarm and protection circuits as it’s heatproof. 🔌🔥👍🏽

It’s commonplace in the UK and has been since at least the 1960s (And presumably came about as a solution to post war shortages of rubber) but I don’t know if it’s known of in other countries. 🇬🇧😇

Used commonly in backup power situations, or in situation where said power needs to stay on at all costs. This cable is usually rated to be within high temperatures for 2-3+ hours. We’ve installed these for backup generators for a large hospital in my city. A long with used them to connect backup power for a large apartment that housed older folks.

The idea is that if there was a fire somewhere, there is would be very little Likelyhood of this power source being disconnected or melted. As a result people can evacuate or the fire can be dealt with in safe manner with all fire suppression/control working.

I wish mineral insulated cable is widely available in the United States. I love the steam punk aesthetics of them. Not just the superior UV resistance compared to plastic insulated wires.

That is some serious pyro. Brings back so many memories. Hated getting a short when joint completed.

Good old MI cable. I did a generator hookup with this once. Moved on to fire alarm shortly after and stuck with it for 30 years. Nice job

Stuff working with that, 🤣by the time you get the pot on and sleeve all the conductors it will time to go home 🤣. Interesting though, I have never heard of or come across 19 core pyro and I don’t think I want to.

Always test before crimping the seal. Just in case. 😁

How difficult to work cable can you make?
Maker: Yes.

As an apprentice electrician in the 1970's I remember doing this for a fire alarm installation in a warehouse where new tyres were to stored.
13th Edition IEE regulations UK. 😅👌
Thanks for the memory.👍

Loved the stuff. Did big mod job years ago all heavy duty 3 core 6mm and larger, , also various single core mineral wasn’t easy to bend until they got formers to bend it around to get radius ask by client looked great on tray all clipped then we put lid on tray so all the hard work wasn’t even seen…😢😢 day work thankfully ❤

Back in the day it was the only fire proof cable . Still used alot in petro chemical plants I would imagine. Too expensive for fire alarm systems now with cheaper alternatives.

Last time that I ever had anything to do with pyro was in apprentice training school (a very long time ago), but since then, I have not seen it installed once (apart from one dodgy installation that I found in a house where we had moved). Any new installations we did at the power station were always using SWA.

Wow used to love pyro years ago. 7 core was always a challenge but 19 core that’s crazy. Just getting the cap lined up must be a nightmare

Mostly used to power fire pumps and in explosion proof conditions.
