I find these videos really inspirational and helpful. Understanding how someone else looks at written media and how they collect their ideas and thoughts is really insightful. It makes me want to search, research and read even more. It also shows that I am on the right tracks in my learning journey. Thanks Jeff

OMG. Such great advice. Your videos are among the best I have ever seen on YouTube or anywhere else for that matter. Keep up the good work. I will try to watch these videos in a more timely fashion in the future. I know it sounds corny, but I am very proud of what you have accomplished on your channel.

I feel like a fool for not thinking of that post-it note tip before. Thank you. This alone was incredibly useful.

I loved the reminder of keeping notes! I don't keep enough notes. Love the show!

Another great episode with great tips. Aside from the content, the production value in these videos just keeps getting better and better.

Excellent advice! Since ideas can pop up at the most inopportune times, another tool worth using is the voice memo app. Recorded ideas can then be transcribed into the main notebook, whatever that happens to be. It's also a good tool for those who aren't comfortable writing. Memos can be given a title so they can later be identified or even searched

I use Apple Notes, which has the advantage of syncing automatically with all your devices (at least if they're Apple; I don't know what's available for PCs and other tablets). Now that it (finally!) supports tags, you can use them to categorize entries and retrieve a whole category very quickly. I use #tricks, #ideas, #presentations, etc., but you can use whatever makes sense for you, e.g., #cards, #ropes, #theory, etc.

I think a valuable topic for many magicians would be one on overcoming social anxiety. I tend to always just see two types of magician hobbyists - people who are already highly confident people, and people who want to become like that.

For an introvert like me, that is my current plateau - as I'm already an avid note-taker and creative.

Good Tool Tips! I too mix using handwritten notes in notebooks along with MS Notebook on my computer or iPhone.
One other tip (albeit a little technical and not for everyone) is if you have a laptop on your magic card table... download and install the free OBS Studio and purchase a $50 web cam which will allow you to easily record an idea or the performance of it. I sometimes use this in place of writing out notes or to remind of the setup/method of a trick I like in a particular book.

Also the laptop/webcam can be used simply as a replacement for a mirror as you watch yourself on the screen. I use a small tripod with an inexpensive Nexigo webcam. This allows me to easily move the camera to different angles/viewing positions to see what it looks like to someone on my right/left/center or sitting/standing. Needless to say, it has allowed me to catch lots of flaws in my initial handlings so I can address them before sharing in a real performance!

Anymore, I use Apple Notes on my iPad or iPhone when out, on a Mac when home. It does what is needed and the notes are shared on all devices. I know some folks are obsessively stuck on analog tech, and everyone may do as they please, but I’m happy to have fewer physical objects taking up space, and to have the other conveniences of digital technology. I used physical notebooks in the Before Times, and I don’t them. Honestly, most of what I wrote down was junk anyway. It was necessary, steps on a path, but no longer needed.

You know I would read say a card magic book ( my preference)and find tons of great pearls.Maybe 20 to 30 great tricks would stand out to me.Then as I finished the book, I would try and think of those tricks and I pretty much had forgotten them all.Multiply that by nearly every book I’ve read on card magic, then it means I have to go through all the books again to know where the gems are.So what I do now is read a book with a journal and write the page numbers of where the good tricks are, the title of the trick and I rate each trick from 3 stars( good)and worth doing to 5 stars excellent and a real gem definitely a top routine.I now know What are the best tricks in the book and where to find them instantaneously!Just started to do it so I’ll be finished in another few years!😂😂😂😂😂😂But your episode totally makes excellent sense, cheers.

I also number the pages and then starting with the last page I create a TOC capturing the page number, date and title.

Thanks for the good advice, Jeff! I've found keeping a notebook with me at all times also helps me with work stuff, kid stuff, relationship stuff, and other random thoughts. Goodnotes works well with Macs BTW. And that fancy pen you are using?

I feel like I've found my people! Another "geriatric Millennial" who can't bring himself to deface books by writing on them 🤣
As always, this video is full of GOLD - thanks Jeff!!!

Great Video
Btw
I saw a trick today in which a mentalist took a piece of chalk chosen by the spectator from a number of colored chalks and then placed the chalk in between the slates and then suddenly you could hear the chalk writing there was no machine that could make the sound visible. And then when it was opened the the chalk was gone and there was writing on the board

I found this trick very cool any idea which book this trick might be from?

Got a grail book this week - Reflections by Helder Guimaraes, but it almost turned out to be a book regret. As I was attempting to place a last second ebay bid of $55, I accidentally typed in $550 and didn't realize it until I hit the Place Bid button. Luckily, I won it for only about double what I intended to bid and not ten times...
