China's Communist Party has sharply expanded President Xi Jinping's political power, anointing him the country's "core" leader.
The new title gives him similar footing to China's past strongmen.
Park Jong-hong has the details.
The declaration of "core" leadership came in a communique after a four-day meeting of the Chinese Communist Party.
Senior officials stressed the importance of collective leadership and added that the system should not be violated by any organization or individual for any reason.
In particular, the document said all party members should unite around the Central Committee with "Comrade Xi Jinping as the core".
The term "core" is significant as it was first used by strongman Deng Xiaping to refer to himself, Mao Zedong and Jiang Zemin.
It was intended to mean their authority was absolute and should not be questioned.
While the title puts President Xi on par with the past leaders, the Communist Party implied his power will not be absolute.
Observers say the new title will be a huge boost to Xi Jinping's position ahead of a key party congress next year which is held once every five years and where President Xi is hoping to fill the Standing Committee with his own people.
Since taking office almost four years ago, President Xi has consolidated power as head of not only the party, the military and the state, but also a group leading economic reform.
