Detail explanation of the above HOME WORK question

Let the common factor be x
m : w = 4 : 1 (given)

m:w = 4x : x

The total amount of mixture = 40 l

4x + x = 40
x = 8
Now initial quantity of milk = 4 * x = 4 * 8 = 32 l
Initial quantity of water = x = 8 l

after adding water ratio becomes 2 : 3 (given)

Let the amount of water added to be y

m : (w + y) = 2 : 3

put m = 32, w = 8 in the above equation,
we get y = 40 litre As

Total amount = 40 L
m:w = 4:1
Total amount of milk = 4x litres
Total amount of water = x litres
ATQ,
4x + x = 40
5x = 40
x = 8

Total amount of milk = 32 litres
Total amount of water = 8 litres

Let amount of water to be added = y litres
32 : (8 + y) = 2 : 3
32/(8 + y) = 2/3

32*3/2 = 8 + y
96/2 – 8 = y
48 - 8 = y
40 = y

For the starting "4:1", if the "4" were to become 2 It would mean the "1" doubled. Therefore, we can reason we started with 10 litres and then doubled to 20 litres. Finally using 2:1 the milk is just double that of the water 40 litres.

Correct Answer
(c) 40 Litres ✅

Solution :
Given 4:1 means 4L Milk and 1L Water. Thus, 5L of mixture.
Now, to convert 5L of Mixture from 4:1 to 2:3 ratio we need 5L water.
( I got this 5L water on solving this equation, 4 : (1+x) = 2 : 3 )
Thus For 5L mixture, we need 5L Water
For 40L mixture, we ofcourse need 8 times water which is 40 Litres
of Water.

How is the answer in problem 2 is 40 litres since the final milk to water ratio after adding 10 litres of water is 2:1? It should be 20 litres, isn't it ? Thank you and thanks a ton for the videos 👌
