Mercedes starts and dies after replacing air compressor relay

ML GL R- class starts and dies after a few seconds??

Here’s why.

The wrong relay was inserted and it blew the ground on the fuse box.

This fuse box is in the engine bay and its called F58z

Im so glad you made this video. This happened to me on my 2006 R350 about 5years ago. I bought a new relay for that airmatic at Oreillys and it blew out my entire fuse panel. Luckily Oreilly did reimburse me for a blown fuse box. They also notated in their system to not sell aftermarket relay/fuse on the Mercedes. So I learned my lesson and only buy extra Mercedes relays/fuses only. So glad to watch this video so I can share with others.

Dear Master Tech Lou! Greetings and best wishes! Thanks a million for your absolutely unmatched MBZ experience. My fuse box suffered the same demise as you have so meticulously described and shown. I tried every possible methods but failed till I watched your video of fuse box's ground issue. Minimum an MBZ shop would've charge an initial diagnostic fee of $175 so instead I followed your demonstration and for that I ended up buying a used fuse box for $65.00 on eBay. I replaced the fuse box with the one I bought and man it was like magic. Car stayed running even after the suspension compressor kicked in. The symptom was identical as you described. Car will start and in few seconds the suspension compressor kicked in and the car died. I went through all the fuses and the relays of the entire car. It took me solid 2 hours for I learnt from you that by eyeballing the fuses may not be the correct way. So took each fuse out and tested it with the VoltOmeter for continuity. All checked out perfect. A bit frustrating undertaking though! After replacing the fuse box car is running the way it should. I like to send you a gift certificate for you saved me so much time and money. I bet the rip-off indy MBZ would've charged me more than $700 as his estimate was around this figure. Thanks, that is good info. I have an 03 E500, just installed new compressor and went to replace the relay. New relay only has 4 pins, old one has 5, sounds like I need to reinstall the old one and go to the dealer to get the right replacement relay.

I have a CLK 320CDI year 2006 which sporadically dies/cuts off.
When I restart it it starts perfectly as if nothing has happened. Sometimes in ignition position 2 the lights in the instrument cluster go on and off, almost as it is restarting itself. I think that the car has intermittent electric problems so that it doesnt have power sometimes. I have read somewhere that the relays P and R in the SAM front could be faulty I think I will change them.

I have a 2013 S550 and I'm experiencing an issue where the right side keeps sagging. The suspension compressor stopped working, so I replaced it. However, the new compressor still doesn't turn on. I've checked the relays and confirmed there's power. My question is: if the valve block is malfunctioning, could it prevent the compressor from turning on at all, or should the compressor still activate regardless of the valve block's status? Essentially, I want to know if a faulty valve block can stop the compressor from even starting up.

I replaced the compressor on my GL 500 including the relay. Days later, strange messages appeared on the display, LR malfunction - visit a workshop, airmatic malfunction, pre-safe not working. According to these reports, while we were on vacation last week, the engine went into emergency mode and hasn't started since yesterday. Could this all be due to the aftermarket relay??
It is a 2009 march Version of GL 500, 4MATIC

Hi Lou I have a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL 450. The air compressor has no power I checked the fuse has no power. I took out the relay and there’s power in the relay and the relay works perfectly fine. What do you think is the problem could you help please?

Hi Lou, Replaced the pump & control module with new relay. Car has the up dated board. Car runs a few seconds and shuts off.

Lou I'm getting ready to change the air shock that blew out, but I have a question before I do. When it blew out I was sitting parked with the car idling. What do cause the shock to blow out. Days prior I had a problem where both fronts where real low but the rears where high. So I pushed the raise button which worked for the few days then the front right blew out. I then changed the valve block. After the shock blew, what do you think is happening Lou

A quick question? My Rear Sam got water damage and i need to replace it therefore, if i want to replace my fuse box because of the burnt ground (which I repaired and is working fine) but want to replace the fuse box can I buy the upgraded one and if so will the wiring harness plugs, fuses, relays work the same way as with the non upgraded one.. (2008 GL- 320)

Great video Lou. Forget electrical engineer, you should be a college professor. Lou on the test that you're talking about, where you pull the airmatic relay out and try to start the car, will it be a crank no start, or a no crank no start? My R class has a no crank no start problem.
