In a world where cars are self driving, the manufacturer would probably rent out cars as a taxi service rather than let you buy one.

Imagine the mileage you would be accumulating with all that uber drives😂😂

There is one major flaw....

One of the biggest soft benefits of having your own car is that other people don't share that space with you... people are inconsiderate and gross, especially when it doesn't belong to them. One of the biggest reasons I hated public transportation. This totally removes that benefit...

Edit: Some of the solutions people are offering in the comments are so comically bad that I can't even tell if they are serious. Thanks for the laughs, regardless

My brother drove Uber for 3 months, in that time someone purposely cut his seats. Imagine what they'll do unsupervised

My toothbrush also sits there most of the day doing nothing, doesn’t mean I want to rent it out

The car randomly dropping people off in the middle of the street after I leave work like "now get, my master summons me"

Yeah until you have a family emergency and your car is no where to be found

Flaw in logic is that you only drive to work and plan all your driving needs in advance every day. When you spontaneously want to drive somewhere, you don’t want to wait for your car to come home for 20 minutes, and then have it arrive likely dirty and with a depleted battery.

Even better: your car runs errands for you while you work. Picks up dry cleaning, groceries, stops at post office. Picks up the kids from school if you’re running behind at work, etc

Wow!! New way of describing public transport.

You could also set a radius for the furthest it can go so that you know it would come back to you in time in case of emergencies.

Maintenance/cleaning, liability in case of accidents to stranger, no method for hands-free charging yet, someone putting a tracker on your car to find out where you live... :/

The point of having a car is having access to personal transport at any given moment. Your car pimping itself out while you’re at work or sleeping defeats the point of having access to personal transport at a whim.

The actual flaws aren’t the dirt or having the car unavailable to you. The actual flaw ist that most people need their car at similar times. There would always be a lot of cars available with no renters and a lot of renters with no cars. If every non-self-driving car gets replaced by a self-driving one, then there is almost no need for renting a self-driving car.

My first thought was it knows when you get off work, but what if it’s in the middle of or just starting a new ride? Maybe there might be a timer set to stop ahead of the time you get off.

Until you get off work and you’re tired and wanna go home and find that some drunk person has thrown up in your backseat. Or you’re leaving to go to work and go out to your car to find out the batteries are fully charged cause it’s been running errands all night, and the people that took home from the bar left trash in the backseat

That sounds great but at what cost for the software? You’d have to team with uber or Lyft to get paid.

No one seems to consider that your parking spot where you left your car is probably not available when the car comes back at the end of your work day. Now you have to find your car. Let alone discovering what condition some stranger left your car while it was away. Who wants other people… strangers… riding around in your car??

My sister and I were at Warner Bros Studios in Burbank for Batman Day in September. There were dozens of Model 3s on the backlot, with different numbers taped on them.

They were apparently learning the route of the tour for the Robotaxi unveiling a few days later. It was weird and made the actual unveiling super underwhelming.
