Hard to believe this could happen. Especially since he not only seriously wounded President Reagan, but also two other men, and Press Secretary Jim Brady eventually died due to those injuries. This just isn't right. I wasn't even happy to learn that he'd been getting weekend visits to his mother's home.

Only in America can a man that attempts to assassinate the sitting president of the United States and shoots critically and permanently wounds others could someday go free. America is the best country in the world, but this just doesn't sit right. Some actions deserve permanent penalties and sacrifice. Hinckley gets the better end of this today. What message does this say to our future generation and children?

To answer all the Why questions, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and committed to St Elizabeth's.

Oh, he’ll always be watched. There’s no way he’s going to live the rest of his life “unsupervised”.

He’s Schizophrenic, correct? After all of this time and care, he’s no threat. He probably can’t even remember the incident. I have a lot of experience with the disease of schizophrenia.
