I always assumed, like a lot of people, that Harrison Ford wanted to kill him because he was tired of playing the character. But having watched more interviews and behind the scenes footage, it's clear that he actually had a thorough understanding of the character and enjoyed him. It's just that Ford, unlike many other actors, views his characters through their narrative role in the story, not just their personal desires. That sort of perspective is a rare quality in an actor, and given that Han Solo's death is by far the most interesting thing to happen in TFA he clearly had a point.

Harrison would soon learn, probably with dread, that characters in Star Wars always come back in one way or another.

To be fair Han's death was the only moment during the prequels that gave goosebumps the same way the old movies did. So kudos to him.

To Harrison’s credit, you can tell he doesn’t hate the character, he clearly has a passion for it, he just needed Han to have clear utility, and that’s exactly what JJ did in the force awakens; with Hans death at the hands of his son, it leads Kylo into his arc, which is beautifully shown in the last Jedi, how he is still switching from the light and dark side, and is concluded when he throws his lightsaber into the water in TROS, say what you want about the films, but Kylo had a beautifully crafted character arc that was spring-boarded by the death of Han Solo, I’m sure Harrison was overjoyed.
