In this vid, I review the American drama, Persuasion, based on the Jane Austen adaptation of the same name. I have never read a Jane Austen novel before, so I was interested to see how this turned out. But is it everything fans have been hoping for? Find out in the review!

If you want to watch a version more faithful to the book in order to really see the difference from the Netflix version, watch the version from 1995. The stars are Carian Hinds and Amanda Root.

Everything wrong with this movie comes from the fact that the writers: 1. missed the point of the book, 2.think people is stupid and can't understand Jane Austen's writing and 3. tried too hard to be relatable... the writer of this movie is an 80 year old man that think women in their late 20s speak like millennial cliches

I love that you aren't an Austen fan but you still get what's wrong with it!

This version was a travesty. If they'd said the movie was "inspired" by, rather than "based on", and changed the character and place names, maybe even designed the costuming game to be a little fantastical - they could have gotten away with their departures in dialog and tone.it could have been more like Clueless in the 19th century. But they didn't ask me. That was their biggest mistake LoL

The movie left out that the Elliot cad was a serial swindler of women, Anne was next victim.

It's nothing to do with Jane Austin or the actual novel of the same name.

You forgot to mention about her alcoholism

She describes Wentworth as In a time when there was no electricity and she should have never been sharing her feelings about Wentworth anyway. No one knew they were an item . This was in a scene only 10 minutes into the movie, I turned it off.

You really need to read the novel to understand how awful this adaptation really is.

It's great to hear the opinions of someone who does not know the book. The movie does an awful job of adapting the book, but even judging it just in itself, it tells an inconsistent, incoherent story. It's not good. I do agree the production was often pretty to look at.

I enjoyed your really level take of this. I haven't read Persuasion but grew up watching many Jane Austen adaptations, as well as just period dramas in general, and have a pretty decent knowledge on the book I feel for someone who has yet to read it in full. I really wanted to like this adaptation and there were a few bright moments like the opening scene and some of the lingering looks Wentworth gave her (I really feel like Wentworth's lackluster portrayal had more to do with the direction of the film than the actor's fault since I've seen him in one other thing and he was fantastic in that). This wasn't just a terrible adaptation, but a terrible movie in general I thought. There was so much that didn't add up and the fourth wall breaks took me out of the film every time. The substance abuse was shocking to me and I had secondhand embarrassment often throughout the film because of the awful lines they gave to Anne. It could have been so good, they really had the opportunity to expand upon the story by maybe even showing some of Wentworth and Anne's previous love or made Anne's family dynamics more of a plot point etc. but chose not to and gave us this absolute mess instead.

She is nothing like Anne Elliot. Nothing. If amusing an intellectually challenged and easily bored audience is all that matters, why not just put the Artful Dodger in there?

An insult to Austens beautiful writing....this is a serious story.... never a comedy. Changing Annes personality has missed the entire point of the story... JUST PLAIN AWFUL..Dumbed down to a very mediocre forgetable rom com....lets not even talk about the dreadful language changes...all the beauty of the writing destroyed

It had to do a lot more to fail as an adaptation, it can’t even be considered an adaptation. I refuse!

I have to completely disagree about the performance by Cosmo Jarvis in the utterly awful 2022 Netflix "Persuasion." It was bad enough that his character in the film was not much more than two dimension cutout - a cardboard figure put in merely because there had a to be SOME love interest for Anne Elliot to pine over, since Jane Austen wrote one in. But his presence is almost so lacking that the film appears to be entirely about Anne, and nobody else.

Not to mention an utterly unconvincing try at portraying an early nineteenth century Royal Navy post-captain. A man of that rank back then would have been a presence that would fill a room with his character and determination. Merely putting him in an approximation of the correct uniform certainly was not enough, and Jarvis' weak, deferential portrayal certainly conveyed nothing of the type of man who would have succeeded in achieving such an important and senior rank. And I say this as an officer in the RCN.

This is just about the worst adaptation of any book I have ever seen and all those connected with it should be forced to watch it for one solid week and day by day and hour by hour.

"American romantic drama"? It's written by an English woman set in England...
