Ol, Hollis looks like he's been hard @ work making all these videos for us. He definitely deserves a pie. Strawberries were my moms favorite. Her name was Nancy as well.. Thank you both for the education you provide! It is very much appreciated. Bess you both for being such kind and caring folks!

Growing up on our farm, we always had a big garden. We mulched the strawberries with straw, like you, only we didn't have a cage, just aluminum pie plates fluttering in the breeze. We always had a huge amount of strawberries in the peak of their season. There were 7 kids, my parents and my grandparents in the multigenerational farmhouse. One night every year we had strawberry shortcake for dinner, only shortcake. Homemade biscuits, butter, whipped cream, and strawberries, all we could eat. It was wonderful. Fond memories. We also had shortcake other times as dessert as long as the strawberries were bearing. We made strawberry jam and froze whole strawberries. With lots of kids, there was lots of help picking, Mom and the grandparents hulled them and prepared them for whatever we were doing (freezing, making jam, etc.) The cows made lots of manure to compost and put around the plants after they were done bearing, late June or early July.

I am sorry for your loss. I am now older than dirt but still kicking.
