After the council deeming Anakin too dangerous and old to be trained by Obi-Wan, Yoda and Windu have a private meeting and agree to take the child on in a secret training regime, hoping that the tutelage of the strongest and wisest of their order would cement him in the light side of the force and drive away the dark. Windu would train him in combat and tactics, and Yoda on the spiritual side of things, using ALL the resources available, including the holocrons and everything else hidden within the Jedi stores.

My headcannon was always that palpatine actually really cared for vader. However when he saw his failure and injuries he decided that he was not worth it anymore and treated vader as if he was disposable
