Two of the most powerful force users of thei era, Darth Sidious and Master Yoda. People waited decades to see the ever waited duel between the two, and finally in episode 3, we got a taste of it. Let’s get to the point, who was stronger?

I’ll firstly address, It is extremely debated who had the upper hand in episode 3’s battle? Yoda and Sidious seemed to be drawn in a stale mate, with both showcasing their force powers, acrobatics, speed, and dueling techniques, however it didn’t seem like either one was victorious. So let’s go into the comics, novelizations, and expanded universe for answers that the movies don’t give us.

What If Qui Gon Jinn Trained Anakin Skywalker?

What if Padme Survived?

What if Mace Windu Killed Darth Sidious?

Yoda recognized and accepted that Palpatine had the high ground. His ego didn't need to get himself killed to prove a point.

Out of all the Star Wars movies, for me this was the peak moment on a grand scale ...ultimate evil v ultimate good ...gave me chills when Yoda brushed away the Emperor's guard...

All I know is that when I was in theaters literally *EVERYONE* was cheering for Yoda during the fight.

"Sidious's lightning was to fast for Yoda."

*Palpatine slowly, and obviously raises his hands whilst flat out saying he is going to shoot force lightning at him.*

I love Yoda's fighting style, the constant crazy jumping and spinning. Looks so cool on screen.

Yoda only fell. He never lost. He got back up, trained Luke, then Luke trained Rey, and we know the rest.

Palpatine knew that to win, he just needed to survive.

Yoda's goal was to fight, Palpatine's goal was to escape.

Yoda was wise enough to know he had to disappear and prepare. The Jedi order was caught completely off guard. The Sith had plotted and prepared and basically caught the Jedi with their pants down. Killing Yoda would have effectively ended the Jedi. Yoda wins. By not being able to kill Yoda, Sidious failed.

Ultimately it was Yodas training of Luke that led to the downfall of Vader and the emperor, so I would say that Yoda won in the end.

If Yoda managed to re-engage the lightsaber duel he may have won. The fear on Sidious’ face in the moments before Yoda reappeared was revealing. He was genuinely terrified of having to restart the lightsaber duel because he’d likely have lost to Yoda’s superior technique.

Luke: Master Yoda, is the dark side more powerful?
Yoda: No!

I think Yoda would was more powerful. With almost a millennia of training and knowledge. That goes an extremely long way.

Sidious was clearly hesitant to engage with Yoda when Yoda confronts him in his chamber.
Yoda stated "If so powerful you are, why leave?" To which Sidious responds: "You will not stop me. Darth Vader will become more powerful than either of us."

Yoda is more powerfull in a equal 1 to 1 battle. The only thing that makes Sidious so powerfull is that he doesn't have to hold back wheras Yoda is always holding back :)

Dooku also stated ( In the books ) that if Yoda would fully let go ( Dark side ) he would be the strongest force user to have ever lived ( Even stronger than Anakin or Luke
