In this video, we speak to Peter Brennan, Reader in Physiology from the University of Bristol who tells us about two possible reasons why losing our sense of smell and taste might be a symptom of COVID-19.

Transcript:
Recently, there have been reports of patients with COVID-19 losing their sense of taste and smell. So, what could be causing this?
Well, we don’t know exactly, but one of our Members, Peter Brennan, Reader in Physiology from the University of Bristol, tells us that there are two possible explanations:

Let’s say you have something nice cooking in the oven. As it’s baking, it releases particles that waft into your nasal cavity and attach to olfactory sensory neurons - the cells that detect what we smell and then signal this information to the brain.

COVID-19 could be killing off these olfactory sensory neurons, keeping the signal of what you’ve just smelled from getting to your brain.

Another possibility is that inflammation, part of the body’s response to fight off COVID-19, causes swelling in the nose that blocks off the airflow and prevent odour molecules from getting to the olfactory sensory neurons.

When we talk about how this relates to lack of taste, what we are really referring to is lack of flavour. Our taste buds are still sensing sweetness or saltiness but we process the complex flavours of food by combining these tastes with what we smell. This is why when we have a blocked nose and can’t smell our food, it often tastes bland!

I feel so much relieved now ... literally reading all the comments made me realize I’m not the only one feeling like this ! I lost my sense of smell and flavor a few days ago already and I’ve been constantly taking tea, drinking sooo much water, eating fruits and trying my best to only eat healthy foods . I hope and wish everyone gets well and that we pass through this pandemic.

Just thought I'd give everyone some reassurance. I was worried my smell sense vanished permanently but after 6 days I can now smell again. I made sure to eat healthy food in order to recover quickly! :D

I’m on day 6 with no sense of smell or taste! I steamed my face twice a day and very slowly I’ve started to smell strong smells like apple cider vinegar and coffee😭 I still can’t taste anything though *EDIT* It’s day 8 and I can taste orange sweets (lol) and also some spicy foods too. I’ve been smell training too and starting to pick up some smells slowly. It gets better guys hang in there! 💕

For those struggling to get their sense of smell and taste back here is what worked for me!

1 garlic clove minced
A bit of Ginger minced
One tsp of cinnamon
Lemon and some water
Get it to a boil and drink it warm.. you can ad some honey as well for the taste..

I’ve had three glasses two yesterday and one today and I’ve gotten some of my smell and taste senses back!

It could be corona virus but I think for some people it’s just a minor cold or allergies because I’ve experienced this many times even before corona existed so don’t worry too much to the point where you’re paranoid about having it

Reading some of these comments are worrying, I've been eating dramatically less because there's no point in doing so if I can't even taste my food, and seeing people say they've lost their sense of taste for up to a month makes me want to cry.

Dr. Berg says it's due to Zinc deficiency as respiratory infections use up a lot of the body's Zinc.
