WHAT IS "MEDICAL PAY" COVERAGE UNDER YOUR CAR INSURANCE, AND HOW DOES IT PROTECT YOU AND YOUR PASSENGERS?
"Medical Pay" coverage is like having some health insurance under your auto insurance policy. In California, it is not required, but rather, voluntary coverage. I always advise my clients to have medical pay under their car insurance, but just make sure it is "primary" coverage, NOT "excess" coverage.
"Excess" Medical Pay v. "Primary" Medical Pay:
"Excess" medical pay coverage is not worth the money because you have to first bill out your private health insurance and if they don't cover a certain medical bill, then excess medical pay kicks in. Often times, it still gets denied, and it is just another hoop to jump through. "Primary" medical pay coverage applies right away without any hassle.
Benfits:
How does Medical Pay protect you and your passengers? First, it applies to you and your passengers for any medical bills reasonably related to the car collision. Second, it applies to anything related to the car crash, usually much more liberal than most private health plans, thus preventing medical bills to go on your credit report. Third, it is triggered immediately. Fourth, it is cheap coverage in terms of dollars per month. Fifth, a good injury lawyer to can use it to increase the net recovery to their clients - I will do another video on that benefit.
So, do not hesitate to ADD medical pay coverage to your auto insurance without hesitation. Try to get at least $5,000.00, but some insurance companies offer up to $10,000, $25,000, and beyond. It is very good to have and it is not explained or talked about enough.
