SRAM’s GX Transmission is more refined than X0 and XX

We smashed SRAM Transmission X0 with the equivalent momentum of a hypersonic baseball, we tried to drown it underwater, and we sent it to outer space. It survived it all. Now, SRAM has released the GX version of this mountain bike drivetrain, so we're checking out what they've changed so you can decide if this $1,099 drivetrain is right for your ride.

*Disclaimer:
To best describe the strength of the various derailleurs we tested, we opted to compare the momentum of our pendulum to that of other "real world" moving objects (however likely/unlikely they may be). We chose to look at momentum carried by the pendulum, as opposed to the actual force delivered to the derailleur, because we do not have the tools and equipment needed to measure that force. If Dan was unclear at any time and implied that the impact force was identical to that of a hypersonic baseball, as opposed to the momentum of the pendulum being equivalent to that of a hypersonic baseball, it is only because his physics education does not exceed that of a college physics 101 class. If James made any calculation errors in the video, it is only because he was in the middle of finals week in his physics undergraduate degree during the filming of the video, and not because he didn't take every possible measure to ensure the accuracy and clarity of his comparisons, up to and including checking his methods with his classical mechanics professor.

The spider power meter is actually more accurate than the spindle power meter (±1.5% vs ±3%), and it measures full 360° power. The spindle power meters only measure power from your left leg and doubles it to get full power.

I have the GX, and I must say the coating on the cassette and chain of the X0, XX models is a noticeable improvement in smoothness and noise. The GX works the same and is maybe more durable, but the shifts are loud and don’t have the immensely smooth gear meshing the other models have.

Yes, I do have scratches (some of them deep) on the derailleur, but in crashes I always managed to bend the cage which surprises me that people manage to do the opposite.

My favorite part of this will be watching the price of regular GX AXS drop

I have XT and it's been a little finicky the past couple rides... I know it's good but it needed a tune-up and I was bugged that it had been noisy, skipping gears etc. Then I see today the launch of the new SRAM GX transmission and am half-considering upgrading. But then I also spent an hour cleaning and tuning the derailer and it's running 100% again with shifts smoother ever, so you could say I'm happy with XT haha

I think this is sweet, but wouldn't buy for $1k to replace something already working fine. If I was building up a new bike, that's a whole other story -- I'll probably will get transmission for the next bike

I love how you can customize the entire bike from the frame up. Don't know if there's any other mtb sites like that, but that's cool I think.

Thank god the fixed the battery issue. I was constantly knocking my battery off riding fakie down gnarly rocky rooty chutes.

cool vid..!! the new GX crank arm would be even sweeter in black to match the chainring

The e-bike T-Type ring is available with the 104BCD, so should be able to be used with the existing Quarc AXS Dub Zero; it is steel and limited to 34, 36 and 38 teeth though.

i assume the sweet spot would be to mix in this groupset with the x0 casstte, which seems like it still has the xdome technology that the GX doesn't have. tangible weight savings and definitely extremely durable. I'd be interested to see if this new GX cassette holds up any better, but I have a feeling that those single piece cassettes are still king (and honestly one of the best selling points of sram groupsets, both for road and mtb)

@fanatik does the bash guard on the chain ring work like a chain guide as well can’t see the one I have on my trek fuel exe running over that?

I want to love sram drivetrains, I really do, but my cable GX AND GX AXS shift like utter crap compared to my Shimano XT. Like it’s not even close. I hope transmission improves on the shifting.

Smashing from the side is a common use case but how would this derailleur do with a 1" stick stuck in the spokes wrapping it backwards?

i've some fine 5dev cranks and absolute black oval rings (t-type compat), am i able to buy the rest of the drivetrain ala-carte ?

Can I use my existing Hope 155 specialized ebike cranks with the GX System?

My local bike shop has had a few of them coming back for warranty replacement

I mixed up X01 with GX derailleur. They must have changed the design on the GX for a reason . Battery is less exposed than on the higher price models .

I have an Ibis V2s and I’m considering T Type, what i’m interested to know is how the crank lines up to the v2s 155mm chain-line, for instance do you space it out after removing the ibis isg05 mount as you don’t need it anymore and how close do them bash guards get to the chainstays as the rings are always very close on the Ripmo ✌️
