I asked Twitter how they talk about Linux to the uninitiated. Here are their responses!

You can find me on these socials:

You can email me at thepixeltux-at-gmail-dot-com

Common questions:
What distro do you use?
On my office PC I use Ubuntu 16.04 with GNOME 3, not to be confused with Ubuntu GNOME.

On my Steam Machine I run a regular SteamOS installation.

What do you use to edit your videos?
Audio editing: Ocenaudio
Video editing: KdenLive

What are your machines specs?
Steam Machine: Intel Core i7 at 3.8 GHz, Nvidia GTX 970 4GB, 12 GB RAM, Ubuntu 16.10 w/ Steam Compositor

Desktop: AMD FX 6300 at 3.5 GHz, Nvidia GTX 750 1GB, and 8 GB 1600 MHz RAM, Ubuntu 16.04 w/ GNOME 3 (not Ubuntu GNOME)

Where do you get your music?

I actually showed this video to my grandmother because I knew she'd enjoy seeing my featured tweet, and the points made here made her actually want to make the switch.

I like the fact that I can automate almost everything on my linux system with some bash scripts, I also like that I can control the resource usage of applications with things like cgroups, docker and linux containers.

"I don't have to defeat my machine..."

Cool video! I'm a newish Linux user who has left behind my windows OS for a couple years now. Freedom! ☺️

I always point to package management. I start off with "on Windows you google an application name, hunt down an installer, download it, click 'next, next, next, install' all the while dodging checkboxes for browser toolbars and Adobe Flash" then explain that on Linux it's one command or popping open your graphical software center, searching for it there, and clicking install once. Then continuing on the point I talk about updates, and how your software gets updated when you update your OS instead of getting that annoying popup that says 'hey, there's a new version out, go to our website and do it all over again'. I think it's pretty convincing.

I still like the face that *Nix can bring old/outdated hardware back to life after Windows nolonger supports it well or at all. It saves money in the long run that way, and that is something most people can get behind.

For me, I started using Linux for one (admittedly selfish) reason: it's free (as in gratis).
Why pay $100+ for a Windows license for a PC that would be largely devoted to web browsing, email, and everyday productivity tasks, when I could do the same thing for free? After that first install of Ubuntu 7.04, though, I started discovering all the power and utility the Linux terminal afforded me, and now I'm working toward getting my Linux+ and Red Hat certifications for work. A little curiosity can go a long way!

A lot of people think they won't be able to do everything they need to do. Giving up Adobe products was the hardest for me. Now I'm proficient in Gimp and getting pretty good with KDEnlive running on Manjaro.

Did no one mention community? I think that's the biggest reason for me. Not just that it's there to help people out but that it holds the power.

I was having a meeting with my boss and Windows restarted because of a forced updated and forced restart. He looked frustrated and I jumped in and introduced the idea of a free and totally customised system. The idea of community software and of course, no forced updated and well... no more privacy breaches and cyber attacks.

Linux DE today is more simpler than Windows 10 is.. Minimalistic is the key word to use here.

Unfortunately, you have no idea how accurate you were with the phrase "clandestine mandatory app". I've had many Gov positions and it's out of control now. To me, it's the equivalent of cyber lord of the fly's. each kid represented by country.

If Vulkan can kill Direct X 12 and force Development to Vulkan for all games to bring gaming out of Windows Monopoly then I will switch to Linux. Linux Gaming needs to meet Windows Gaming Selection but we are still heading in the right direction. If I didn't game I would have been on Linux since Windows 8 came out. Windows 10 Malware is holding the gaming industry back instead of embracing Vulkan.

Linux really is undeniable faster. From my experience, I can tell you that even plasma 5.9 is faster than Windows.
