As a sound engineer, I can attest to what this man is saying. I began making sound effects for video games back in 2011. My first two years were the most productive. As I gained better equipment and more options, I ran into the exact same scenario that this guy is describing - I didn't get much done because I had too much stuff to think about.

I found that after cleaning out my DAW and my VST folders, and installing only a few that were essential to my work, I was a lot more productive. It's good to get a refresher on principles as basic as this, and recordingrevolution was right on point. Good job!

This is exactly what I have been realising myself over the past few months, in not just recording, but every aspect of life.

Great tip.

A man with one watch knows what time it is. A man with two is never sure...

A lot to be said about what you just said Graham! Basically back about 16 years ago my friend produced my first cd. The quality was incredible. And all we had was a cheap mic, an 8 track recorder, an alesis Quadraverb and a dat machine. Like you said, it's all about the ear, and not the gear!

Thanks for another great video! I was getting into a rut and this reminder came right on time. Keep doing what you do. I really appreciate it.

Hey Graham,

I love how most of your advice is applicable to virtually any production workflow, regardless of the field.

I am an amateur musician and professional architect and graphics designer and this video would be just as appropriate in my field!

Love the channel, big fan.

This is not only about home recording. For me this is a great lesson/advise/tip. I knew it before, but with your video I have really realised I have got too many options in life :)
Thanks man!

You're describing the Paradox of Choice, never thought to apply it to music but it makes a lot of sense! That being said, walking into my studio and seeing layers of equipment still makes me very happy.

Which he has worked for, and what has lead to the wisdom that he shares so freely.

I just went down that road with plugins, and will say that this year was a cleaning have sold-traded probably 60% of my stuff, and am weeding out more....

This has to be the best advice I've heard. I went to school for recording and am just now getting back into recording. This is very helpful. thanks

Thank for your opinion. I found it absolutely correct. I remember going into a studio where the engineer took 9+ hours just to get that perfect drum kit sound. It just sapped all the creative energy right out of everyone.

Great video and channel. I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now and recently been working with a guy to record my music. I'm starting a home studio to continue my music recording and to gain experience with music mixing/product and this channel is so helpful. Thank You!

This is incredible advice. Can be applied in many areas of life aside from music. Its really emphasizes on the fact that its not about having every tool, but rather about knowing everything about your tools to get the the job done. Thanks for the advice. Really enjoy your channel.

I couldn't agree more with the subject matter of this post.  I heard an interview with Paul MCartney where he discussed the limitations of the studio gear the Beatles used, and in particular, the difficulty of editing in the old days.  Paul said, "we were often forced to make a decision and use takes we weren't always happy with, but in the end, it got the music out there. Today, the opportunity to continuously tinker leads to a type of paralysis..."

Graham has helped me so much. The #1 rule is no joke. limiting options leads to improving focus.
