I hope some dev guru will make a script to purchase all the assets from fab at once when it is online.

Crazy times! I'm glad we have someone that can keep us up to date when things are confusing and tricky. Thank you Sensei 🙏

AI generated 3d content is going to be all over that Fab

I agree on all the points. Some MegaScans should stay free to help with the onboarding, but having all of them free as they were now hurt the perception of other assets being sold.
MegaScans should have two tiers: low-poly and up to 2k textures should be free; this way, you can still use them for prototyping and learning. 4-8k and high-poly should be paid, as they would be used for production projects.

I don't agree with Megascans being a "competitor" to other artists selling their assets on FAB. Megascans being free was actually one of the main reasons why so many people are using it. Bodycam, for example, was made by students, and I don't think a lot of students have that much money to spend on a few hundred assets. Having the library that is already there for free and then charging for the new ones that they add regularly would be an ideal situation, but realistically, it won't happen, lol. Thanks for the breakdown, Sensei.

It would be epic if you upload when Fab releases that way we can all “purchase” the free assets

This hurts and discourages solo-developers and small teams who doesn't have money to spend on development.

You have one of the best UE channels on YT hands down.

I hope they do something similar to what they currently do on the Unreal Marketplace with the Free For The Month stuff. Have one Megascans pack be free per month so that we can build a library of assets over time.

The blog says that some Megascans content will still be free after the switch to FAB. That could be the demo content. Also wouldn't be surprised if they do periodic free Megascans giveaways like they do with Unreal Marketplace Asset Packs, though, it's not certain either at this point that they'll even continue the monthly free asset giveaways after they move to FAB.

I'm not paying 0.99 cents per asset. The only reason I have time to play around with Unreal Engine is because I don't have a job.

Feels like Epic is shooting itself in the foot with this move. It’s not as bad as what Unity did, but it’s still not great.

I think your reasoning why assets will no longer be free is correct.
If Fab is supposed to be a commercial marketplace it makes totally sense.
Basically it's a pivot from trying to promote Unreal Engine to operating Fab as an asset marketplace that can generate revenue for both Epic Games and artists.
For artists this is great news.

The fact that Epic announced this beforehand is commendable. This is the way.

Worth remembering Epic is not your friend. I think your theory is correct but they've probably also noticed they've acquired all the users they were ever going to get through free megascans. If EGS had ever taken off then the free games would also have stopped. If Unity had never been invented Unreal would still cost millions to licence.

I'm surprised this won't become a subscription service

NGL in my experience I got into UE5 (the last time I'd used it was UE1 I think lol) BECAUSE there was a MASSIVE, FREE, HIGH QUALITY POOL OF RESOURCES. Can't imagine I would have made that switch from Unity without Megascans being available. They should really reconsider, at least having the lower quality or older assets be freely available.

this is what i enjoy, people doing hard work so people can freely use their creativity. this is whats best for humanity. more can be done.

Unity take this as their opportunity to bounce back. Unreal has a great Ecosystem as because they are virtually free. Unity realized their mistake and perhaps rectify themselves to be floated.
