Who else is stuck in an endless loop of watching youtube shorts for no reason? You click on one and you just can't stop watching all of them

I paint a lot, so this is how it works-

Red + yellow + blue = brown
Everyone's skin tone, no matter what race, is a variant of the color brown.

The lighter shades like yellow and white will lighten the shade of brown, matching her skin tone. If you have an olive skin tone, more yellow would blend it better into your skin. If you are brown or black, adding more red will work best.

Hope this helped!

The fact that it’s gonna work Bc those colors literally make skin tones

As an artist, typically when we paint skin we use a lot of colors and blue, purple, and green are always present. It’s your natural skin tone.

Guys everyone understands that mixing classic skin undertones will get you a skin color... the issue is knowing how many dots to put of each color

Fun fact: makeup formula uses actually a blend of white, black, red and yellow. It's just easier to get a skin tone with a balance of those colors. For tone you have a balance of white and black and for undertones you have a balance of red and yellow, simple as that.

Edit: so about cool undertones: they don't use "true black". You might notice that if you use cheap black gouache or watercolor it instead of getting grey as it gets lighter, it gets blueish. Same applies: they don't use true black, so as you get deeper in the shade, you also get cooler.

This is essentially how hair color works as well. If you try to lighten your hair and it has too much yellow in it you need a more purple. If it's orange you need blue to tone it. If you have too much red you have to add green to cancel it out it's just pretty much the color wheel. And once you learn the color wheel then you can neutralize any hair color.

Fun fact: everyone who’s ever taken a painting class isn’t surprised by this at all

Edit: Yes, also anyone who does art or understands color theory etc.

This is actually because of a concept called Color Theory. In the most basic explanation, all colors are made up of the three primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. So you can make a foundation shade that maybe in too warm for you into a cooler tone by adding some blue creme paint, and vice versa. The same concept applies for facial imperfections like pimples or dark under eye circles. To fix those you want to use a complementary color to correct it. So a red pimple needs a green concealer over top. And dark purple under eye circles should get an orange concealer over it. This is why it’s called “color correcting”. Figured I’d explain it for anyone who was wondering why this works.

Dear artists in the comments: the color theory thing makes sense. No one is surprised by that. We’re surprised that A.) the cream paint doesn’t look cakey as hell and B.) that these people know their own color ratios so well.

i’ve seen so many comments starting with “as an artist” or “im an artist”

That is actually how I get skin tones when I'm painting! Combining all of the primary colors will give you a brown. The key to getting it right is how much blue and white you put into the combo of paint you do!

Lots of artists including me aren’t surprised that red, yellow, white, and blue make a skin tone
