The PS5 Pro Can’t Solve Sony’s Real Problem

Sony are in a bit of a pickle. The PS5 Pro doesn't have a clear market, and half their install base aren't even upgrading to the PS5, all while customers feel ripped off.

Sony admitted that 75% of their users want the frames. So they made a presentation zooming in on pixels

The price is ludicrous, but you can't be ripped off if you don't buy it.

You ask why anyone would still be on PS4. The answer is something else you said, “Maybe they know something you don’t.” Tens of thousands of hours of good games came out before the PS5. Times have been tough for many since 2020. They would rather get deeply discounted PS4 games than pay for new PS5 games. The truth is most of the best games are playable on PS4 because frame rate and resolution don’t make a game great: its gameplay and/or story. PS4 players should be praised for valuing what truly matters and not yielding to FOMO or other pressure to “upgrade”

The old sony we knew and love has been dead. Its been dead the moment they killed their Japan studio and moved to California.

Anyone that cares about 4k60 with ray tracing and no compromises is already on high end PC. This is dumb by Sony.

Sony can f right off, and honestly, Xbox isnt far away from alienating their consumers either. these companies are in for a rude awakening.

Did they really think releasing it without a disc drive and stand was going to go well?

It feels like Sony has reinvented the 3DO. It's too expensive. It doesn't have enough utility. It focuses on too niche of a market. The value to the average consumer just isn't there.

"Look at how good these games you've already played look"

They didn't even show us any of their upcoming software other games they have down the pipeline.

They fumbled... Badly.

No disc drive, no stand, no noticeable difference in graphics both visually and performance wise. To top it off the insanely high price point. It’s a hell no, if you gave this to me I would sell it to buy parts for a gaming pc or a new gaming handheld.

I'm genuinely left wondering who this is for.
Who the fuck has the kind of money to casually afford a PS5 pro and an 8k TV, but not the kind of money to just go and buy a PC and _any_ smart tv with the steam link app instead?

If people really cared about graphics Vampire survivors would have only reached 1000 sales today.

Sony following up Concord’s embarrassing failure with the PS5 Pro announcement is so awesome. It reminds me of the Xbox One reveal a decade back. Crazy how the times change.

So Sony had all the telemetry to tell them that gamers wanted higher frame rate with good gameplay and so they built a machine to give better visuals....
You cannot make this S up...

This isn't about a $700 PS5. It's about a $700 PS6. They are normalizing the price.

No, Sony doesn't want you to spend 700$ on a console, they want you to spend 810$ USD on a console.

8:58 ''But why would anyone still play on a PS4?'' My honest answer to you here is that I started gaming in the 1990s. I am used to getting an incredible amount of joy out of vastly more primitive games. A 30 FPS PS4 game still looks very impressive to me. I also remember a time when each new console was a considerable leap in technology, graphics and value for money. When I look at the PS4 and PS5 side-by-side I often cannot tell the difference. I am willing to bet that many 20th century gamers think exactly the same as I do and it is probably us that accounts for that 50% PS4 player base.

Sony is gradually steering people away from purchasing physical discs. Given their history of removing access to digital purchases of older content, I'd rather not take the risk. It makes more sense to opt for PC, where there are reliable ways to buy, store, and transfer copies of games properly.
