One of the most brutal and horrific execution methods used throughout History was the oubliette, a terrifying small dungeon found inside of castles. But inside Germany there was a variation of the oubliette used known as the Angstloch, or the Fear Hole. Someone would be thrown through this into a large dungeon below and they were then left to rot.

When I was a kid we lived next to Turku castle in Finland and I still remember how scary it was to look down into the "kuiluvankila" (could be translated to gap/crevice prison). It was used for 200 years for so called "confession prisoners" (tunnustusvanki). The prisoners were kept in this 8 meter (26 feet) deep hole until they confessed. In those times it was important to confess, even if you already were considered guilty, as confessing meant you might be excuted but save your soul. Another nasty Angstloch I've been to was in Cesis castle in Latvia, you could actually climb down into this quite big dark cell through a narrow hole (there were lamps, of course) and it made me feel really anxious being done there.

Incredible channel & I'm dead impressed by your research (pun intended!). Seriously though, it's truly fascinating, whilst being beyond comprehension - us humans & our malevolence, limited only by our imaginations.
Again, GREAT channel.

Gnarly. I would not want to die that way. That is really terrible.

I was watching a documentary on Irish castles and they had a segment on a castle in County Cork. During a renovation in the 70s the construction crew was cleaning out the oubliette and found human remains. Most of the bones were dated to the 16th & 17th centuries.... _MOST_ of them. One was found wearing a watch from 1939. The textiles found with the body also dated to around the same period.
A search of people reported missing came up with three or four probable leads, two of which had relatives still living in the area. The siblings of both men had thought that they had just moved to Canada or the States and started a new life.
DNA testing was still twenty or more years away. But I hope they identified the man and gave him a proper burial.

Why are we humans, as a species, so drawn to intentionally harming each other, and so drawn to creating the most horrific ways to do just that?
Some other species may attack or kill one another, but we are the only ones who do it just for pleasure or entertainment purposes.

These were only done to the common people

The nazis used a larger version of this in concentration camps. It was as deep but much larger around. They would toss multiple people into this over a period of time and watch as the victims succumbed to horrible feral instincts such as cannibalism.

Leave it to us Germans, we sure are a unique bunch. 😁😁

I wanted to create a drinking game where you have to take a drink when oubliette is said in one of these torture videos, but then realized a worldwide shortage of alcohol would result.
