Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

I think the "just show up" method is insanely slept on. The amount of times I didn't want to work out but just "tried to" and then ended up exercising for 2 hours is immeasurable. This video motivated me a lot. Thank you so much for uploading it.

Some quality content right here. Really liked it. Made a summary -
1. No pain no gain (Sign up for painful things, have accountability)
2. Focus on one thing. Tips to achieve this
2.1 Input based goals(Ex: work 10 min on script)
2.2 Eat the frog(Indulge in the one thing first thing in the morning)
3. Just show up(set the bar low to avoid failure)
4. Keep score. Track progress to
4.1 measure how far you've come from the beginning
4.2 Clarity/proof of having made progress.
5. Memento Mori: Remember that you are going to die. Avoid being regretful in the end.
6. Get out of your head(Do two push ups and take a cold shower - rejuvinate yourself when feeling low)
7. Stop using social media
Caution: lookout for signs of burnout.

Girl me too! I straight up spent 2 years of my life eating snacks in bed and watching anime, but now I'm finishing up my last courses in linguistics and going into a double major for computer science.
For anyone who's interested I recommend listening to the podcast episode called You, But Better on Hidden Brain. Behavioral scientist Katy Milkman goes over various of ways to set up your weaknesses against yourself so you stay motivated

"Mind hacks to get my lazy ass to do things" 🙌🏼 Tina, if you write a book on this, I'll be the first in line to buy

How in the fresh hell did you get a job that required you to code without actually know how to code. That's heroic

I quit all social media (minus YouTube, obviously LOL) end of December 2021. It’s been a huge game changer. I’m mindful of what I follow & watch. As well as how much time I spend on here. Still got a ways to go. But I’m proud of myself for how far I’ve gotten so far. Great video & tips! I’m going to give that book a read. :)

Embracing that we're all lazy slugs by default is freeing✨ When I was high school, I was motivated by FEAR but that disappeared after self-reflection and therapy. Without that fear driving me, I found it difficult to motivate myself. Now I create systems that support healthy habits. Now, life is easier & more productive :)

In my second uni semester I made it a goal to at least attempt an assignment the day it was given, as I struggle with procrastination. The eat the frog first mentality made it much more manageable as even if i didn't know what to do, I now knew what I had to learn to complete the assignments. Hopefully this works out well for me

The "do just that one thing" helped me so much to starting the get out depression situation so many times, but was a pain to learn by myself. The "just show up" tip is always one of my final steps to become productive again after one crysis, again learning this my myself was also a pain. My tip for the first thing is don't let the thoughts that you only did that one thing today drown you.

Everyone is mentioning ADHD but I relate a lot to this as someone with depression, which can also cause executive dysfunction. Thanks for the video, it was actually very helpful (so many of these types of videos aren’t)!

I love how this video is so relatable to me and my life right now because I'm totally seeing myself put so much energy into distractions instead of getting shit done! I feel so lazy and worthless when this happens, but you acknowledge these moments in the video and simply seek out a way to improve the next day, while not letting that moment define you. I can't tell you how many times I've made a whole to do list that starts off waking up at 6am and not doing any of it. TwT

For me focusing on 1 thing each day, just showing up, the idea that I would be disappointed to die knowing that my life was a joke (i.e. I wasted my life on nothing) pushes me to give 100% to want I want to learn/achieve and yes some days it feels really hard to focus so I need to "get out of my head" by cooking, taking a shower or listen to music.
Starting my day with the 1 thing I want to do removes great stress and puts me in an advantage.

Hey Tina! This is not a diagnosis or anything, but what you do sounds a lot like me and I just got diagnosed with ADHD (the inattentive type) a couple of months ago at 36 years old. I suggest that you try to check with an expert on this because if it's true, calling yourself lazy is just hurting you.

By the way, the reason why women in average are just diagnosed between 36 and 39 years old is because:
1. We're not usually the hyperactive type, but we can be hyperactive with our minds or speech
2. ADHD is genetic, so we grow with other family members who did things like we do so we think it's normal (i.e. in my family, arriving 1h late to a dinner is normal)
3. We learn a ton of techniques to help us function (like the ones you mentioned here which worked for me until they stopped working again), but we still do a ton of effort to be able to manage our personal and professional while wanting to be good family members, friends and partner(s), but after so much effort, it's in the mid thirties that we just can't do it anymore. It's such a big effort and we just end up super anxious or depressed (that we later find out it's low dopamine from ADHD).

Before I wrap up, I want to say that ADHD has the poorest name ever, we don't have attention deficit. We have an attention dysregulation, because when deadlines hit or for any other reason like gamification, we go into hyperfocus and do stuff way faster than anyone else. Or we hyperfocus on things that we love and learn a ton of stuff. I suggest you check Connor DeWolfe Tik Tok or How To ADHD to see if you can relate. 🙏

I kept this on my Watch Later for too long, and when I finally got over the “pain” and watched it, it turned out to be an extremely honest, relatable, and helpful video. Thanks!

The shower part is so true. For me, the heat in my body somehow keeps me comfortable AND sleepy that I become lazy. It's something I've been trying to fix by taking daily showers (which is ok since I live in a tropical country anyway). I still slip up sometimes but I'm doing so much better compared to back then.

Dear Tina, this is exactly what I need right now. I'm new to a 8 to 5 job and struggling to keep on studying data science. Thank you so much!

Love these! I'm currently using a lot of them to keep myself on track, I've found the "one thing" and "just try" really helpful. I approach just try as "just effing do something" which I think is a Mark Manson thing (maybe), but it's been super helpful to get me through some stuff I was procrastinating hard on. I also like the hack of making something a part of your identify. I routinely tell myself "I'm a person who has discipline", then I go do the hard thing (workout, study, clean, whatever) over time it's slowly crept into being a part of who I see myself as, this tip was something I picked up from Struthless, another YouTuber, and it's worked wonders for me. Love this video, am definitely going to incorporate the "seeing who I could have been" tip in. I feel it'll be a killer motivator for some of the things I'm a bit fearful to pursue. Thanks for the amazing content 💜
