Be thoughtful in how you create ace representation

It's actually wild that so much of the ace representation is in villains of stories. It's always good to see some representation that isn't putting asexuality in a negative light.

I’m doing the same, but I’m Ace too. It’s only about half that I want to see representation of people like me, the other half is just that that’s the default lol. I couldn’t write an Allo character if I tried, every one of them is Ace or unspecified.

Even still, it mattered to me that for Lezzeren, it’s explicit. It goes by fast, just a shudder at the idea of one of the **things** expected of him in marriage. But it’s in there. It matters for him.

There’s also the fact that he struggles to differentiate platonic and romantic love. That’s a personal thing of mine. I literally can’t tell if I’m writing a romance novel, I just expect it to be pitched as such.

In a book I’m working on, I have an Ace/Aro character that still has sex, still gets aroused just doesn’t feel attraction of any kind to the person, just the pleasure, who constantly flirts with the asexual biromantic person who doesn’t have sex, and I love the dynamic because they will never get together and the Ace/Aro knows it, and he’s just giving the other person a hard time at this point and being an antagonist brat

One other thing too, but before that LISTEN to the feedback is very important. Now sometimes feedback and criticisms might not work with the story you're trying to tell or the character(s) involved, but that person still had something that didn't work for them. Even if the specific concerns can't (or shouldn't) be addressed the underlying concerns could still be addressed. Like you can address sex-repulsed concerns while still keeping the Sex-Favourable character Sex-Favourable for example. And again LISTEN without trying to defend yourself is very important, keep your mouth shut basically while they're giving feedback. They'll be more willing to give you their honest feedback even if some are ignored, other feedback from them can (and likely) will be acted on.

Alastor from Hazbin is a great example of an aroace charcter without knowing his experience. His character background makes sense for his feelings. The writer explained it that he doesnt really know hes aroace he just thinks he hasnt met the right woman yet. Hes from the earlt 1900s so considerig lables "asexual" as term unless maybe referring to animals wasnt really like a thing yet, you know what i mean? So for his character this works out in the creator not writing the experience because she isnt ace herself, but she has confirmed he is ace because its quite obviius that he is 😊 the representatiin is there for sure

Personally I disagree about writing the experience of asexually, there are comparatively few of us so the more people trying the better. We might get a really popular novel getting it really, really wrong, but at least then we can talk about it?
I'd rather someone trying to be respectful and get it wrong, than only people who don't care about us writing us.

You should also try to avoid making a sadist into that ace character, as that's a harmful stereotype that just dehumanizes asexual people.
