Here's an idea: I go on travel websites and look at their itineraries for travel ideas and how they are organized, it is free. If the country is English speaking I will just fly there and travel on my own. I watch YouTube videos to learn about the trains, buses, etc. But Japan, we joined a tour company because no one speaks English, not even in the hotels and I was too chicken to take the trains on my own.

Can you please share the health insurance company you have that covers both US and international?

Another tip: US Embassy registration. What do you think?

How about a drive up the 5 all the way to Vancouver? I would love to do a road trip like that some day.

11 - Planning: I use Google spreadsheets, just gives me a better overview of, I usually have 2 rows and 3 columns per day:
Upper row: activity description
Lower row Google maps link with my walking tour / potential spots to hit, columns are for morning/midday/ evening.
Maybe a bit too much planning, but that’s the way I like it, gives me the good feeling of (probably) not missing something big

7 - Arrival
Hotels: at least when traveling Japan (basically the only country I do extensive inner-country travel), I usually go for late train rides to the next destination (ie sightseeing in city A first, and then get to city B afterwards) as early check-in is basically in Japan anyway. Plus, I like to wake up in the city where I’ll spend the day.
But that’s just me. A friend of mine likes the 7/8 am trains, bringing the suitcase to the hotel and then start exploring.

Flights: general rule: the earlier, the better. Might not apply to very long flights, because I might not want to get up at 4 a.m. for a 20 hour connecting flight, but yeah, I rather spend my vacation day at my destination than at home (with a later flight)

We have been to DVNP in the summer 2 times and it was actually really nice. We stayed at the Oasis and hung out by the shaded pool during the day then up to Dantes Peak (cooler) for short hike at sunset and star gazed at night. So it is possible but do not hike in the day time. You have to be smart about it.

I have a Travel List that I use for every trip and I never forget anything. Even taking the trash out is on my list 😂

One more thing about packing: on my recent trip to Japan, I stayed in 4 cities, and given the small hotels in Japan (at least when traveling on my budget (however, never spending over 90$ per night for a single room even in Tokyo is something I can hardly complain about)), I used packing cubes for the one/two night stays having all my clothes for those one/two days m the small/very small pack (instead of packing the cubes per category how I usually would)

Good info, but i was hoping you would also have touched on how you research if a destination you're interested in and have never been to is safe or not, and what your criteria is to make a go/no go decision. For example, Mark Wiens has been traveling around Syria recently which blew my mind, despite that countries continuing unsafe environment. I know you're not Mark Wiens, but I'm just very interested in learning how professional travelers plan those kinds of things.

Would love to see eSIM installation and tutorial walk through. My roaming fees are adding up every time I’m abroad😬. Thanks!

Chris I’d recommend Outernet and Sky Garden (though needs booked in advance) for London - both free but very unique experiences

I use excel spreadsheet to organise all my bookings, reservations, packing list, useful phrases. Each criteria has a different tab and it all stays in the same document.

On visa application on a G7 country, does having a visa from another G7 country help in getting your visa application approved?

Interesting point for 16, as all the research I have done so far for Japan, is have lots of cash as most places are still cash heavy. Any updates for Japan specifically?
