The Unreal Engine combined with the power of OpenAI's GPT has opened up a lot of possibilities for the future of video games. This demo created by Replica Studios allows us to directly interact with NPCs. It's surprisingly good, and gives some insight into where things might be heading.

Any support is massively appreciated!

These NPCs are smarter than the ones I have to deal with IRL.

You just know, Chris Roberts just saw this video and has extended Star Citizen's scope another 50 years. 😂

The NPC misunderstanding you and asking you not to rob him is not unlike a real person misunderstanding you on the street and being afraid of you.

I've never been both terrified and excited for the future of gaming like I am now.

This is insane! I saw some similar AI powered npc mods in Skyrim. Once this gets better with improved response time, this will be revolutionary.

What I am impressed with is that the npc stays in character, whether gloomy or upbeat, rather than the same npc vacillating back and forth between mood shifts or opinions. There is a sense of consistency and continuity.

What if you found an npc you really liked and could enlist any of them as a follower...

RPGs and fans of the genre have been rejoicing at this possibility for ages but having it actually be here is even more thrilling than many of us imagined.

Where this gets *really* interesting is when the LLM gets leveraged to tie these dynamic conversations into other game systems, so that offering them money actually trades items. Or asking about someone's troubles creates a new quest to address them.

The most incredible thing is how much this could improve ANY genre, not just RPG. Sports management? Now you can have real relationships with players. City Builder? Now you can get advanced input on individual citizens' thoughts on your city. Shooters? Now you can get specific tactial information from HQ or squadmates. RTS? Squads can now report on things specific to them instead of "Unit under attack". 4x Strategy? Diplomacy is suddenly MUCH more interesting. This has the potential of being one of the biggest milestones in gaming.

I know someone who made use of the Inworld framework to add an NPC AI dialogue to Bannerlord. I tried it out, the you can talk to pretty much all NPCs even peasants, but they'll have contextual information about the world and factions and even who the player is through the game's renown system. It's not perfect, it's only text based, but it's a cool start and it's interesting to see it used in a fully fledged game as an addon

Star citizen really needs this. Especially considering 90% of your interactions will be with NPCs.

What AI in games makes it interesting by directly talking to them would be conversations about real life issues, objects or company processes. Latest news info or current gas prizes for example from a AI powered npc.

Can you imagine not only AI npc's but entire cities with actual living occupants?? AI npc's with jobs and actual in game agendas?!?! Its crazy to think about where this will go. You can even take it a step further and use AI to generate entire worlds from top to bottom. The possibilities are limitless.

Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life. That there's something wrong with the world, you don't know what it is, but it's there. Like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that brought you to me.

Do you know what I'm talking about?

Nothing is ever gonna beat the good old Oblivion npc dialogues.

The problem with ChatGPT is that it is always generating the most blunt and boring responses. That's because it was trained to predict the next word, and that's why it always chooses the most obvious and uneventful continuation of the sentence, because it's easiest to predict.

If you also combine this with a memory of your conversations for the NPCs you can basically establish virtual relationships. That could be really cool, cuz one thing that have always pulled me put the immersion in games is when NPCs just gives the same response over and over.
