I’ll be buying a truck in the next 6-12 months. Only looking at trucks with APU’s and Espar (or similar) heaters. That should be a good indicator of lower idle hours which are one of the biggest killer of engines, emissions systems and take-home pay!

I just bought a late 2017 cascadia with 600k miles for $65k at 11%. 747 credit. $49k financed. $1700/month. Local truck. 40-50k miles a year. Engine hours are low. Has APU.

I wasn’t aware some of these used units were $140k+. I thought I overpaid.

This must be Canadian because $160K for a used semi with 500K miles is way high in the US.

_Yes, engine hours is extremely important, diesel engine. I was determined the life of the engine not the mileage, a truck that does not have an APU unit on it can end up being a trap, deceptive._

_I know for certain Detroit engines after 2018 is 15 to 20, 000 engine hours before the bus or before you need a major overhaul, the Cummins engine after 2018 is 20, 000 engine hours to 25, 000 engine hours before the next complete overhaul_

_I don’t know anything about the Mac engines, Volvo engines, or the Paccer engines_

I worked in Operations with a heavy / medium transport company. We ran our own depot & had fuel tanks onsite. These were used to fuel up the smaller vehicles & often our Sub Contractors accepted part payment in fuel to get moving after they were loaded up. We had proper Amenities with showers, canteen & meal rooms. As a new person I got to hear the woes of Owner Operators who worked huge hours but were often awaiting payment. We ensured ALL drivers could get proper rest breaks whilst their loads were unloaded or loaded. Often drivers refilled their water tanks, had a cooked meal & rested their bodies at the same time. Tyre Checks / air fills were done by yard staff & often the fuel top up was enough to get them moving until the next drop off or until they were paid for their deliveries. Most of these Owner Operators were working from week to week & lived in their trucks most of the time.

Paying for a new truck means you’re basically living to pay off debt, let’s say you had $300k cash, would you buy a truck and try and recover what you spent ? It’s not going to happen because trucking doesn’t pay enough and the equipment depreciates and falls apart !

Good news is 2018 trucks are cheaper than 160k usd.

Or buy a 40, 000 dollar 20 year old truck and don’t worry about payments and interest rates

I would look at mileage and hours of idling when it comes to any semi truck if I was going to purchase one.
