🛑 RED FLAG ALERT 🛑
Speech goals that focus on masking are HARMFUL for autistic children (e.g., reducing stimming, ignoring echolalia, forcing eye contact).
Here are a few red flags to look out for when choosing an SLP:
❌ Tries to "fix" your child
❌ Does not provide updates on your child's progress
❌ Does not re-evaluate their goals based on your child's progress
❌ Does not communicate with you or include you in your child's treatment plan
Instead, look for a therapist who ...
✅ Is neurodiversity affirming
✅ Documents progress clearly and openly
✅ Re-evaluates their treatment plan based on your child's unique profile and progress
✅ Communicates with you consistently and clearly
✅ Includes you and your child in the treatment plan using functional and meaningful goals
