Putin never threatened nuclear weapons. These words were put into his mouth by the USA and Brussels-EU, but Putin never said them. He just said that if Russia is attacked, then Russia has the right to defend itself by any means. I'm sure the US would react the same way. How was that again with Cuba?
Also that Putin wanted to blackmail Germany or Europe with gas is a big LIE. He has always offered to fulfill his supply contracts. But the gas deliveries were prevented by the sanctions, which the Europeans also had to follow
