Learning Japanese can be overwhelming - especially when you start out! I know that feeling, because that was me 1 1/2 years ago!

Here’s how I would start from scratch ⬇️

1️⃣Learn Hiragana and Katakana
This is your first Step and there’s no way around it. If you can’t read and write and understand the pronunciation, everything is gonna be a mess. This is your first “Wall” 📈that you have to climb in order to learn Japanese🇯🇵

2️⃣Learn Basic Grammar
If you want to learn Japanese - as a westerner or english speaker - you have to take a look at grammar. It makes your life a lot easier learning via rules🤓. The Japanese Language is completely different to English in regards to structure etc. But notice how I said “basic” grammar? Thats because if you want to speak conversational Japanese - a lot of grammar is unnecessary as these are not often used in daily life. So don’t waste your time there⏳

3️⃣Learn the most common words
As in every language, there are words that are used more commonly and words that are not. Wasting your time with learning useless words ❌ is not optimal if your goal is to acquire conversational japanese as fast as possible⏳.

4️⃣Start practicing Speaking
As in every language, if you don’t practice speaking you will never be able to hold conversations. Learning grammar and vocabulary is cool and so - but if uou don’t use it, it will be useless. Speaking 🗣️ and practicing by immersion is the fastest 💨 way to learn and improve in any Language! I know so may people who learned Japanese for years but when it comes to speaking, they are really bad it - and thats because they never USED it.

5️⃣Learn Kanji
Now Kanji is the most difficult part in my opinion. It takes so much time and effort but I put it last because it doesn’t really contribute a lot to holding conversations in Japanese. But if you want to take your Japanese to the next level and want to read books and Newspaper - learn Kanji as you’ll need it!

My goal is to rather read or understand written Japanese, so kanji is a necessity. I study slowly and some may say ineffective but I’m staying consistent! The dopamine hit when I learn a new kanji and then see it somewhere being used and me finally understanding it… it’s a good feeling. I can understand simple sentences for now, though I’m getting really confused when a lot of kanji appear in a sentence and I’m not sure how to translate it, lol.

My goal is mainly being able to speak because we definitely want to visit Japan again. For witten language, you can still use a translation app. So this approach definitely makes sense, I'm focusing on basic grammar, vocabulary and hiragana/katakana right now.
