How to Build a Rope Railing

Hey guys! I decided to split this video into its own so I could really explain how to build this rail system. My DIY Deck video already has a ton of info in it (linked below) so I didn’t want this info getting lost.

You will need a 4x4 pressure treated post
1 inch rope I found mine at Home Depot
Pl premium glue
GRK fasteners

You’ll also need a measuring tape, a circular saw - I am using Dewalts new worm-drive cordless and am SO impressed with the power and battery life.
You will also need a level and a drill.

If you have any questions let me know! I built this railing on the deck but you could easily replace an old railing with this new one.

I've been thinking about doing this on my deck for three years and watching this I'm doing it my next weekend off. Totally reminds me of typhoon lagoon or margaritaville! Just how I like my backyard, a resort and a getaway steps from my door! Great job!

Why bother using a post if you are going to compromise the integrity by notching it as you did? Aesthetically it looks good, but if somebody leans a significant force on that post it is going to split vertically.

You really should have used lag bolts instead of those tiny screws. Its cute though, dangerous but cute. Looks like a 1.5- 2ft fall... Hopefully do not have an elderly person or child up there.

Those post are not up to code. Notching a post is not acceptable. They need to be attached to the joist with a carriage bolt. That’s why the post shifts when she drilled the 1” holes.
