3:07 tree protectors are not intended to make the rope more secure, as suggested here. They are meant to stop the rope from damaging the tree. There is a lot of pressure on the rope around the trunk. Over a fairly short time, it will cut into the bark and harm the tree. Fine if you plan to cut the trees down, or don't care about their health, but otherwise a few simple protectors are worth using.
