"It only lasts until dispelled" has the same energy as "you only live until you die"

You know what would be hilarious? A world where everyone is under the effect of true polymorph. If hit with dispelling effects (as per true polymorph) someone will revert to their true form: that of a squirrel. Everyone is terrified of the dispell magic spell.

I recognise that Wizards has made a ruling, but given that it's a stupid-ass ruling, I've elected to ignore it.

Yes, TP can be dispelled. That is why my 17th level wizard, after TP'ing himself into an adult gold dragon, used the Clone spell. 30 days later, when the Clone was ready, he off'd himself and transported to his new body. And, because that body had always been a gold dragon, he was no longer in danger of being forced back to his flimsy human form.

If you are of a level to learn true polymorph then it's likely that you'll be able to learn the spell clone. To guarantee that your new form is your permanent form all you would have to do is clone yourself after concentrating on the true polymorph. This would mean that the clone body that is being produced is a fully functional and permanent dragon body. Then, once the clone spell is complete all you do is kill yourself

I would like to truly apologize for the "read it" jackass. I hate it when people get so hostile over absolutely nothing.

Hey bard, I uh noticed you have what seems like a dragon egg. You didn't steal that did you? Wdym you made it? Wdym true polymorph is the best spell?

Fun Fact: Beholder's Antimagic eye does not dispel spells. The Antimagic Cone acts the same as an Antimagic Field, which means that you cannot cast a spell from it, and any spell or magical effect becomes suppressed.

Thus if you have a persistent magical effect like True Polymorph, then a Beholder will transform you back to your original form while inside the Cone. But as soon as you exit the cone's effect. you will transform back into a dragon

I'm your DM and True Polymorph now only works if you either wash my car or do yard work.
"That's not in the rules."
As your DM I decide which rules to use.

I think bards can pick True Polymorph up through magical secrets

Fun Fact: Animated Dead and Created Undead can not be dispelled, similar to instantaneous effects. You can't unfire the ball.

you can just do stuff with clone to change permanently. so with a little more work yeah it's permanent

Aaah... It's always heartwarming when the D&D community comes together at the campfire, to share their wisdom and knowledge of the rules with each other :D

If I'm the dm the only way to "return" to your old form after it's permanent is to have true polymorph casted on you or Devine/godly intervention.

Dispelling true polymorph makes as much sense as dispelling the damage done by a fireball spell. The spell is already through. It changed the person. It's not being concentrated on anymore, nor is it still active.

That would make a pretty good bbeg, it's an evil dragon but if you observe the dragon for a bit you notice it doesn't move as naturally as you'd expect it too. If you don't observe it and decide to fight it then after you barely take it down it turns out it was a wizard still ready to square up after you ruin his cool dragon cosplay

I love the resurrection loop that makes it the true form not a spell effect

Actually, if you have someone, if necessary a simulacrum cast clone on you while true polymorphed, the clone will be a dragon in its true from. After that, you simply have to die to transfer your spirit to your clone's body and permanently become a dragon, regardless of any dispelling or magic suppressing magic. However, it would just kinda be smarter to stay in your true polymorph form until dispelled or killed, then once you're dying or unhappy in your true form, let yourself be killed and wake up as a dragon again.

Good thing a beholder only suppress magic, not dispelling magic

The idea behind the game is that everyone is having fun. If everyone agrees that it would be cool, including the dm, then you can have a go. So long as you also accept this can and will be rescinded when it ceases to be fun.
