Actually, you don't need a particularly radical change to the timeline to prevent early Japanese successes in SEA.

All you need is for MacArthur to do his goddamn job in the Philippines and actually enact the pre-war strategy upon hearing of Pearl Harbor, which included dispersing his air assets and moving sufficient resources to the Bataan peninsula (the fact that Bataan was part of the pre-war strategy was the main reason why the Americans retreated there to begin with).

The Philippines were never meant to hold out forever, but had they survived for the estimated 6 months the pre-war plan called for it would've absolutely destroyed Japan's plans, which were essentially operating on a shoestring pulled tight to the breaking point. Had any one part of their plan took any longer than OTL, the whole thing likely would've fallen apart.

And MacArthur never seems to catch enough shit for his absolute bumbling in the Philippines and beyond and it aggravates me!

Like world war 2 never started as appeasement still went on after Poland got partitioned, and some soviet political turmoil from maybe another purge gives the Germans an opportunity to attack with the allies sponsoring the Germans to go crush the Soviet Union which ended in an 8 year long stalemate across eastern europe until the major powers brokered a peace agreement once the Germans started losing.
