Thanks. I asked you this because I’m self taught and you answered me back. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience. It goes a long way.

Bro....this is what I'm talking about sharing information and teaching others as simple as this is...it is still knowledge

You should be teaching trigonometry in carpentry to high school kids. Communicate clearly and in an easy-to-understand manner, and you always have good reasons for what you are doing.

This is actually a very important point to make. When working with others you may need to know what they do in order to get the cuts correct.

Great way to teach it! The only thing I’d add to it is that the saw is taking away an 1/8 of material for the typical saw blade so you can factor that into your total measurement.

I typically always mark past my measurement with intentions of cutting out the pencil line to get my exact measurement. If you take the blade right to the edge of your pencil line then your cut will always be accurate.

My grandfather would hit his blade with a torch for 3-5 seconds as the spun when he needed really perfect cuts. And the blades all cut PERFECTLY straight. He was a master woodworker and said he was taught that in his teens.

And once again that is the proper way to cut! Temple bill is putting some people on to some knowledge on how to be a better carpenter!!

This was something that I couldn’t grasp for a long time as I’m a finisher by trade. Once I understood everything changed. Now precision carpentry is apart of my business. Another tip that meant a lot is keeping your pencil sharp af and best is using a razor to score in precision applications

We should name the 3 different examples. I believe the 3rd one is eating the line. Im not sure the other two.

I've always hated the pencil mark principles. I guess I was a born machinist because they just aren't exact enough for me. I'll be Damned, though. My old boss can use a speed square older than me, a dull pencil, and a tape measure with no marks for the first six inches and build something to the highest standard out there, and the mans been through three strokes. It's a skill I wish I had.
