What are your theories for Silo Season 2?

After watching first season the idea behind the tv show/books seems to be the following:
A very long time ago, humanity faced complete extinction (probably something that was foreseen). So a group of very smart people built a very large number of silos to save humanity. Every silo had a specific number assigned (the one we saw in first season was 18).
140 years before the tv show, people wanted to get out although it was not safe, and they ended up dying. So in order to preserve what was left of humanity, a few people (founders) decided to destroy all evidence of the life before the silos

IMO the giant metal door down below is an entrance and the place where come out to clean is the exit, so the entrance is below and the exit is up top

I can't remember from the book but were all the cleaning suits flawed from the beginning or did a person wake up and be told to damage the suit or were the suit fitters told to damage the seals. Also why was it toxic close to each silo but not further away from it at the latter stage. Does the book note how much time passes in the silos?
