If you read Ron Chernow’s very in-depth biography of Washington, Mary was not a nice lady, nor were her reasons for keeping George out of the navy to protect him. Mary was extremely concerned with social status and money, and naval officers didn’t make as much as other branches. Relations with the British were fairly decent at the time George was looking to join up, he wanted to follow his older brother who he really loved and looked up to. Unfortunately his brother passed away when George was about 15, he contracted tuberculosis.

Mary and George didn’t have a good relationship and it was often said that Mary was considered a difficult, nasty person even in those times.

The house he bought her still stands it’s a historical site, the things 4 bedrooms and almost 2, 900 square feet on 7 acres. Absolutely enormous by the days standards. He also gave her 2 slaves to handle everything in terms of cooking and cleaning. She was a horrible woman. And the part about her preventing him from joining the British navy was not out of the goodness of her heart or out of some patriotic spirit…British naval officers got paid relatively little and she was so obsessed with money and how others saw them that she would have died from shame if he was just a lowly naval officer. Not a very nice lady. It’s true she kept his father’s inheritance from not only George, but from his siblings as well. George may not have needed it but they damn sure did
