Celebrate the positive achievements of historical figures, condemn their evil actions, and strive to be better humans with each passing generation.

"He was the first President, one of the signatures on the Declaration of Independence . . ." Washington never signed that document. He was in New York during the first signing on July 4th.

George Washington was not good with tactics and war planning, but as a good leader he LISTENED to his subordinate leaders and was open minded to hearing out the ideas of others which back then was a very rare thing for a General to do back then.

I knew about him using other human teeth as dentures, it wasn't uncommon and some people only believed me because of Les Miserables but that explains why you don't see him (and many of his peers) smile. Poor Martha

I think it's so important to recognize people for who they are. No one is perfect, and if we pretend we are we won't learn anything. @Infographics pretty please do one on Thomas Edison. ... whew... what a dick.

Washington's crowning achievement was not becoming the next King George, but rather peacefully surrendering power. That was the real important example he set for the world.

@17:40 - "Like the United States of America itself, the legacy of George Washington is not simple, clean, or bloodless. When celebrating the results of his accomplishments and the nation he helped to build, it's important that we don't erase the evils that he was complicit in, either. After all, if we can't learn from the wrongdoings of the great men of history, we will be doomed to repeat them."

General Washington did all right. We can remember when he was Lieutenant Washington, Captain Washington and then Lieutenant Washington again period and then you know the rest. I don't know if you mentioned that they wanted to make him King of the United States, but wisely he refused this honor, establishing our modern-day presidency. Good job g.!

We gotta realize nobody is perfect, but what their impact is and what we can learn from it is more important

Its same with Winston Churchill, my mother thought he was a hero. You read he was war mongering, loved war, racist opportunist according to his peers. Some old books are good to check out closer to the time they lived. Humans are complex and everything in context of the time.

About William Lee, Washington himself actually freed him directly in his will, citing his loyalty and bravery during the Revolutionary War.

A pattern I noticed with Washington is that many of his changing views on slavery were expressed in personal writings rather than in public speeches or published works. He actually expressed not wanting to separate entire families of slaves, although there were actions he took where he clearly took exception to that sentiment. He was quite self-contradictory with his views and treatment of slaves and slavery.

This isn't complicated. Some seem to think we cant talk about the bad. Or if we do were called communists, woke, or whatever absurd term they come up with each week. Talking about the bad doesnt negate the good. Both can co-exist. But more and more it seems some want to completely disregard the facts and teach what they think should be taught, rather than what did happen. The good, the bad, and indifferent.

It's impossible for us to comprehend just how different culture was then. Humans are monsters.
