A spark is when electrons jump across a gap between a charged object and the earth. A negative charge builds up on your body, the excess charge flows onto the metal handle when you open it, and you feel a spark. Thick metal rods known as lightning conductors earth the tall buildings, allow the lightning to discharge safely though them. Before refuelling starts, a bonding line from the aircraft is connected to earth, so any electrons will flow into the earth.
