The Metallica version is a love song from James Hetfield to his wife and stands out as one of the greatest heavy metal ballads of all time as well as a very moving love ballad.
When I hear this version, it makes me think the entire world about to end. It’s so haunting and sad but also beautiful.
It never fails to amaze me how you can take a piece of music, and change the context and the presentation and end up affecting the entire meaning of the track. This is also proves that heavy metal is basically just choral and classical music played with distortion.
