you can also break the algorithm into chunks so that you can distribute the workload to multiple machines via a master-worker pattern. Map reduce might be another good option depending on the specifics of your app, particularly if its data intensive

That was KDE under Ubuntu Maverick, with desktop effects turned on to get those see-through, dim, non-active windows. I like it pretty well, but when it's dark out, often the shock of going to my browser window can be pretty bad, maybe I should see if I can make it gradually brighten rather than just snapping to full brightness.

Hi Sean,
Nice overview :) Thanks,
What is the DE you are using?

using proxmox can you run a single VM across multiple nodes simultaneously? im looking for a way to implement a super virtual machine using several physical small machines (nodes) to do hard video editing with a cpu intensive application.

No, virtualization is not a solution for creating a simulated large compute cluster, it's kind of the opposite. You need to look for HPC (High Performance Computing) clusters, but your video editing software will need to support HPC clusters as well. You probably need to first scale up to a high end machine, and only try to cluster when you need performance beyond what a single high end machine will give.
