I Bought The Cheapest Supercharged Alpina B7 In The World - Project Chicago: Part 1

I bought a giant check engine light! That's right, finally Alpina on the channel. And not just any Alpina, it's the notoriously "reliable" E65 B7 with the N62 V8 engine. As you'd expect, it's quite broken and in need of TLC. Join me while we take delivery and inspect this 2-ton luxury rocket.

"What do you love about your job?"
Delivery guy: "Revving cold, broken cars into the limiter and see the owners reaction. That always gets me"

Hey im a e65 specialist and know your problem by looking at the symptoms. Your eccentric shaft (valvetronic) has been worn out on both sides/engine banks as your throttle input is in fact the valvetronic motor turning this eccentric shaft pushing in or out the intermediate levers onto the valves creating variable valve adjustment. So everytime someone puts its foot on the pedal this eccentric shaft will be adjusted to the gas pedals electric position. These eccentric shafts wear out due to delayed oil service intervals. Replace the eccentric shafts on both sides with new needles from bmw and also the intermediate levers. The engine is starting rough because of a possible misfire due to one of the intermediate levers failing to make contact with the counter part in the valvetronic assembly. You can fix it temporarily by unplugging the mass airflow sensor near the right upper side of the radiator. When its unplugged the engine will run in safety mode and pushing all the valvetronic levers always 100% open/up instead of 0% closed. Then it wont misfire.

Now you’re talkin Sreten, having spent 16 years with BMW and some of those years as a Master Tech, I’m impressed with your skills and your attitude towards tackling this level of vehicle. Keep up the great content!

You sir, are a total beast. I’m still sorting minor stuff out with my e39 m5 that I finally got back on the road after 5 years, and have an e34 and e32 to completely go through after that. I can’t even imagine taking on anything else right now. I don’t know how you do it, but keep up the good work. I’ve definitely picked up some knowledge from watching your vids.

The humor has always been good, but it's getting better and better. Love it!

Seeing that all the US- YouTubers carry these moneypits into the junkyard gets my hopes right up for this one :)
That said, it looks like the previous owner looked after the car as much as his wallet could :)

I agree. The stock window tinting is perfect. The tint that blacks out the windows detracts from the overall style.

Just a little tip from a fellow E65/E66 owner thats done a lot of engine work on my N62B40TU and other N62's- Viewing Vanos adaptations though inpa will give you a reference position of the vanos adaptations on a coloured gauge. Double check they are in the green. if the adaptations are in the red or borderline that can mean there is excessive wear in the timing set (chain stretch, failed guides or tensioners). This can cause similar errors as well. Easiest is to check the timing chain tensioner as for bank 2 it is accessible from the top and its the bank you have your errors in.

Regarding the excessive power draw from the vanos motors, one possibility can be the 4 needle bearings along the eccentric shaft, I have seen a few that have seized (usually sludgy engines, or mistreated engines (revving when cold) ) or a bad earth/pinched wiring in the DME box.

I'm a huge fan of your work and I'm excited for the future of this project. Good Luck! and let me know if I can ever help :)

26:36 Sreten, I'm impressed thet the guy, with the cleanest cars, and always fixes all things broken on them, then decides to have the dirtiest and most broken laptop in the world! Maybe, it's the evil twins laptop? :D

1. get to check the IVM for bad soldering. 2. check hole below the water pump for antifreeze bleeding. if the coolant leak from this hole - need to chahge water tube inside the engine, with engine removing. good luck!

My god i can imagine the panic the owner must have had when he saw that bill. Owning a BMW is scarier then all of halloween combined sometimes

I started with the e21 (single headlight model) 20 years ago…worked my way up to a 97 e31 (same colour, silver)…loved my BM’s…

Don't know if you've seen it but Hoovie gave up on one of these in his 17 May 2020 YouTube video. I love your shows and your sense of humour. Your twin should make more appearances.

It looks already SO good straight from the trailer in the morning twilight in the rain with the lights on. This car is gorgeous. In the full daylight... a little less so.... Second time now watching the video, definitely a project I'm very excited about! Good luck!
