Blade is being scraped with a hardened steel "chisel" while it is still in an annealled state, prior to heat treating and tempering. 😂😂😊😊😊
Notice also the unfinished state of this cleaver.
Still needs to be ground down and finished.
In this state you will still be able to drill holes to attach handle material etc, prior to the "hardening" process.

I wouldn't call it sharpening as much as shaping. This is part of the process of making these implements. The metal is still in a soft state You can see that the entire tool is covered in a clay slip. Slip is used to protect from the heat used to harden the steel. Actually appears to have two clay slis. Firt a white and then a gray one. Perhaps to feather the hardening/tempering.

I have never seen this process in my life and I'm 44, I hunt and obviously have sharp knives for skinning and field dressing game, but this has got to put a serious edge on the blade!

For those who don’t know this is before hardening process when the metal is soft. If you sharpen a blade like this you bought it’s super low quality metal and it’s more of a danger than a tool

I have never seen this done before. What type of sharpening is this? You're obviously sharpening metal with metal, and it looks like your axe is more or less, a huge scalpel

Someone in the comment section said it's not very good steel, there's probably nothing wrong with the quality of the steel that he's sharpening, it's just annealed to make it softer, and the tool that he's using is obviously hardened. He most likely will harden it once he's done. I've done this a couple of times with 440c steel, which I wouldn't call a bad quality steel.

Pardon my ignorance, but how are you shaving steel off of the blade? Ive never seen anything like this besides on wood

This isn't sharpening, that's called developing a blade profile

I've always wondered do u guys take the metal shaving n put them back in the furnace to create new things or is it just waste?

It is the scraping method. Milling machine ways and lathe ways are scraped to achieve flatness. Steel can be sharpened in this way by using a harder steel tool.

If the blade to be sharpened pulls all those chips out, it means that it is made out of soft metal, mild (mild, mild) steel and can cut maybe ricotta cheese and few more.
