I respect and study BJJ but it's definitely not a complete grappling art. Most of their take downs come from Judo and wrestling. Sambo is less sophisticated on the ground but it's a far more complete art than BJJ, particularly combat sambo which also has striking.

Sambo is only bad as a grappling art when being used in BJJ because you are happy to concede bottom position. BJJ people have a tendency to view everything from their own ruleset

In terms of effective grappling and MMA sambo is very effective

Leg locks are an important part of grappling but having matches and sparing where they're allowed seems more counter productive as injuries seem common and those type of injuries are severe

I train Sambo. My coach has even trained with volk. We do about 50/50 stand up judo/wrestling take downs and ground work/submissions. Heaps of BJJ people come to train their stand up and also a different take on the ground work. Maybe it’s just my place but where I train I feel I effectively do every aspect of grappling you could possibly do in the one class. You just won’t be the best at each aspect though. The coach is a Sambo master and a 3rd Dan judo black belt.

MMA(sambo) and jiu jitsu grappling are not the same is what i think he’s trying to say. Any of the Dagestani mma guys in an adcc type event would get absolutely dominated. So yeah just talking about their submissions he’s right
